Levodopa (LD) determination was achieved for the first time by a cooper metal‐organic framework (MOF) based nanocomposite modified electrode. This research describes a simple, sensitive and cost‐effective electrochemical method for the detection of LD in real samples and the laboratory samples. This method is based on LD oxidation on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface modified with multi‐walled carbon nanotubes and copper terephthalic acid MOF (MWCNTs/Cu (TPA) MOF) nanocomposite. MOF was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The synthesized MOF was characterized by Fourier‐transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT‐IR), energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical studies were accomplished by square wave voltammetry (SWV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The applied MOF, as a Cu‐containing synthetic peroxidase enzyme, can electrocatalyze oxidation of LD on the electrode surface and in incorporation with MWCNTs illustrated satisfactory synergic electrocatalytical properties which leads to sensitive detection of LD in the human serum sample. Limit of detection (LOD), sensitivity and linear range were 2 nmol L–1, 2.26 μA/μmol L–1 and 0.9‐35 μmol L–1 respectively, which in compared to other enzymatic or non‐enzymatic sensors were completely satisfying. Ultimately, stability, repeatability and reproducibility of as‐prepared sensor were investigated and the results were acceptable.

Purpose: Herein we introduce a simple and sensitive sensor for the electrochemical determination of neurotransmitters compounds and anti-Parkinson drugs. Methods: The electrochemical sensor (Au/CILCE) based on gold nanoclusters modified carbon ionic liquid crystal (ILC) electrode was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and voltammetry measurements. Results: The effect of ionic liquid type in the carbon paste composite for the electro-catalytic oxidation of L-dopa was evaluated. Highest current response was obtained in case of ILC compared to other studied kinds of ionic liquids. The effective combination of gold nanoclusters and ILC resulted in extra advantages including large surface area and high ionic conductivity of the nanocomposite. L-dopa is considered one of the most important prescribed medicines for treating Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, a binary therapy using L-dopa and carbidopa proved effective and promising as it avoids the short comings of L-dopa mono-therapy for Parkinson’s patients. The Au/CILCE can detect L-dopa in human serum in the linear concentration range of 0.1 μM to 90 μM with detection and quantification limits of 4.5 nM and 15.0 nM, respectively. Also, the Au/CILCE sensor can simultaneously and sensitively detect L-dopa in the presence of carbidopa with low detection limits. Conclusion: The sensor is advantageous to be applicable for electrochemical sensing of other biologically electroactive species.

Graphene‐based materials (GBMs) demonstrate unique electrochemical, mechanical, thermal, and optical properties rendering them attractive candidates for numerous biomedical applications. Since graphene's discovery, GBMs have been at the forefront of biomedical research offering innovative solutions for numerous diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders (NDs). There are numerous reviews in which synthesis and functionalization methods of GBMs are discussed. However, this review focuses specifically on the recent research advances of GBMs for NDs, and more specifically, on sensing and therapeutic applications. After a short description of NDs’ main characteristics, significant attention is given to the functionalization strategies used to improve the biomedical properties of GBMs, and recent applications for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A description of the use of GBMs and neural stem cell technology and known toxicity issues, followed by several limitations that current GBMs need to overcome, completes this review.
