Enhancing smallholder compliance to palm oil certification standards helps in achieving the global sustainability agenda. Oil palm smallholders are one of the vital parts of the global certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) supply chain. However, little is known about on the importance of palm oil certification for the social and economic development of smallholders. This present study aims to systematically review the social and economic benefits received by smallholders in implementing palm oil certification. The review was conducted in accordance with the published standard, namely the PRISMA statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses). The articles of this study were chosen from two major databases, namely Scopus and Web of Science (WoS). The results show that smallholders gained both immediate and long-term social (livelihood, social network and agricultural practices) and economic (financial management, income, price and production) benefits through palm oil certification. If these benefits can be extended to all smallholders, it will help to boost the participation of smallholders in certification. The current progress, impacts and challenges faced by oil palm smallholders in palm oil certification implementation were discussed comprehensively. Future research and suggestions on the contributions of oil palm smallholders in successful certification were summarised. This eventually leading to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for benefits of the whole supply chain of Malaysian palm oil industry.

Oil palm agriculture has caused extensive land cover and land use changes that have adversely affected tropical landscapes and ecosystems. However, monitoring and assessment of oil palm plantation areas to support sustainable management is costly and labour-intensive. This study used an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to map smallholder farms and applied multi-criteria analysis to data generated from orthomosaics, to provide a set of sustainability indicators for the farms. Images were acquired from a UAV, with structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry then used to produce orthomosaics and digital elevation models of the farm areas. Some of the inherent problems using high spatial resolution imagery for land cover classification were overcome by using texture analysis and geographic object-based image analysis (OBIA). Six spatially explicit environmental metrics were developed using multi-criteria analysis and used to generate sustainability indicator layers from the UAV data. The SfM and OBIA approach provided an accurate, high-resolution (~5 cm) image-based reconstruction of smallholder farm landscapes, with an overall classification accuracy of 89%. The multi-criteria analysis highlighted areas with lower sustainability values, which should be considered targets for adoption of sustainable management practices. The results of this work suggest that UAVs are a cost-effective tool for sustainability assessments of oil palm plantations, but there remains the need to plan surveys and image processing workflows carefully. Future work can build on our proposed approach, including the use of additional and/or alternative indicators developed through consultation with the oil palm industry stakeholders, to support certification schemes such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

Urban farmers who want to produce food for export must adhere to an environmental certification program due to the scarcity of resources in cities and the unpredictability of the international food trade. This paper employs a descriptive narrative technique along with a qualitative methodology. The relevant data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed by condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. Our results suggested that certification was not yet a useful tool for persuading farmers to adopt more environmentally friendly farming practices. The majority of the agricultural business techniques used by export-scale urban farmers are not organic. There was a tendency for farmers to complete certification if it was required for export. In the meantime, social certification, food safety, and content quality were just recommendations made by international organizations rather than being strictly enforced, particularly in Indonesia.
