Sustainable Palm Oil Certification Scheme Frameworks and Impacts: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: Sustainability certification schemes were introduced to the palm oil industry as a response to address the negative environmental and social impacts associated with the development of this industry. The first certification scheme for palm oil, the Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), was established in 2004, followed by other non-governmental initiatives to ensure the sustainable production of palm oil. Indonesia and Malaysia, the two largest palm oil producers in the world, established Indonesia Sustain… Show more

“…The negative impacts of palm oil production have raised concerns for consumers and buyers and have prompted more and more oil palm growers to promote CSPO in order to prove their production is sustainable (Brandi et al, 2013). Certification is a procedure involving written assurance that a service, process or product in the supply chain complies with certain standards conducted by a third party (Majid et al, 2021). Oil palm certification has been used as a tool for monitoring oil palm management practices, traceability for raw material supply and labelling of palm oil products (Kumaran & Suparyono, 2019).…”

“…Oil palm certification has been used as a tool for monitoring oil palm management practices, traceability for raw material supply and labelling of palm oil products (Kumaran & Suparyono, 2019). Currently, a few certification standards promote certified and responsible palm oil production, which is Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO), Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO), International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials and Sustainable Agriculture Networks (RSBSAN) (Majid et al, 2021). However, only three are specific for palm oil, the RSPO, MSPO and ISPO.…”

“…Such support is being provided by a variety of agencies and initiatives, such as Wild Asia, an organisation whose goal is to help local communities implement sustainable agricultural practices. These schemes support farmers with their environmental commitments consistent with RSPO standards, including no cultivation in high conservation areas, mitigation of negative operational impacts on the environment, and implementation of best management practices for oil palm planting (Abdul Majid et al, 2021 ; RSPO, 2007 ). In addition, they support farmers more broadly by considering the human rights and the livelihoods of communities (Ruysschaert & Salles, 2017 ; RSPO, 2007 ).…”

“…To determine whether this certification mechanism can penetrate better environmental management or does not affect the improvement of agricultural, environmental management, this paper innovatively investigates the reality that describes the fulfillment of agricultural certification by farmers. Numerous research on certification fulfillment have thus far centered on product certification, such as those for coffee, oil palm, and forest goods [8,[10][11][12][13][14]. Meanwhile, farmers in developing nations are required to certify production processes as well as commodities.…”
