This study introduces a new evolutionary approach called binary genetic programming (BGP) to design and assess public transportation systems from a sustainable development perspective. The BGP combines evolutionary system identification techniques with k-fold cross-validation to obtain an accurate model between the land use and transportation parameters from a sustainable urban development point of view. To assess the new model, two public transportation systems including the new tram line of Antalya (Turkey) and the bus rapid transit line of Bhopal (India) were considered. The model was applied to classify the transportation systems into transit-oriented development (TOD) and non-TOD. The solutions generated by the new model were compared with those of classic decision tree (DT) as well as the state-of-the-art random forest (RF) models evolved as the benchmarks in this study. The results showed that the BGP is highly efficient and may provide less than 5% classification error. It is superior to the DT and RF solutions, which typically require higher datasets to avoid overfitting. Furthermore, the explicit formulation of BGP in combination with the multicriteria evaluation method increases human insight on the factors affecting the design of public transportations from a sustainable urban development point of view.

The depletion of natural resources has stimulated debates on urban sustainability. Thus, this paper aims to analyze articles on urban sustainability in Brazilian territory, as well as its instruments and indicators. To achieve the proposed aim, this work uses the systematic review method. The studies on urbanization arise as legitimators of a process of modernity and industrialization. Thus, the theme “urban sustainability” gained notoriety when it was introduced in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Many studies analyzed used indicators, with a quantitative and/or qualitative approach, with various applications, among cities, neighborhoods, and even projects. In Brazil, there is a legal framework that favors the development of urban sustainability. However, it is necessary to use adequate methodologies to reduce the subjectivity of sustainability assessment. One of the major difficulties in applying urban sustainability assessment is data availability.

Este artigo analisa o atual modelo de desenvolvimento de bairro, no sentido de compreender a importância da relação entre bairro e cidade. Nessa perspectiva, busca-se a potencialidade da ferramenta de certificação ambiental Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development - LEED-ND. A hipótese de conhecer e avaliar o resultado de pesquisas científicas aplicadas em estudos de caso, num recorte temporal de 2009 a 2019 que tenham sido publicadas nos portais de bases de dados Scopus e Web of Science, amplia o conhecimento para desenvolver cidades sustentáveis. O resultado encontrado indica que 30% da amostragem abrange totalmente as 5 seções do LEED-ND, e destes, 84% contempla a seção Localização Estratégica, 72% a seção Padrão e Projeto do Bairro, 62% a seção Infraestrutura e Edifícios Verdes, 40% a seção Inovação e Design de Processos e 60% a seção Créditos de Prioridade Regional.
