Sustainable Hydroelectric Dam Management in the Context of Climate Change: Case of the Taabo Dam in Côte D’Ivoire, West Africa

Abstract: Management of hydroelectric dams is an aspect of sustainability that comes with resolving problems locally. The use of global indicators has not been a sustainable solution, thus the need for local indicators. Besides, current sustainability assessment tools lack the integration of climate, making assessments in a climate change context impossible. In this paper, we present management and sustainability assessment in a climate change context using sustainability indicators. We modeled a change in the climate u… Show more

“…Irrigation water needs are projected to increase by 15% to 30% depending on the basins by 2050 as well 63,64 . The decrease in river discharge and the increase in evapotranspiration associated with global warming could pose a severe threat to hydropower [65][66][67] . The development of infrastructure in river basins often involves trading off competing objectives in an uncertain environment with many transboundary and nexus issues that need to be well integrated and managed accordingly 66,67 .…”

“…However, various authors documented shortcomings of the existing studies on the topic, including the lack of standardization (Tahseen and Karney, 2017), the bias towards global aspects due to limited use of local metrics (Mortey et al, 2019), the unavailability of data (Nautiyal and Goel, 2020), and the inadequate description of some impacts (Nautiyal and Goel, 2020). The established frameworks for the sustainability assessment of the HP sector also present limitations.…”

“…Sustainability development is defined as 'the development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs' (Wang et al 2009, Demirtas 2013, Mortey et al 2019. Sustainability issues and human activities are closely related to energy use.…”
