The article aims to identify how systemic, multi-scale dynamics influence access to adequate and healthy food and eating and how food is produced and circulated in the Amazonian context of the Metropolitan Region of Santarém (PA). We conducted a literature review, qualitative interviews with key actors, discussion groups and visits to food retailers to address the following research questions: how do socio-economic and political dynamics, especially those related to the soy-meat agroindustrial complex, create or reproduce social inequalities, injustices and inequities, and how do they affect the access to adequate and healthy food? Our findings suggest that the expansion of large-scale soybean growing and livestock, forming the industrial soy-meat complex, contributes to the impoverishment of certain social segments of the local population, accompanied by the erosion of the base for food production. Smallholder farmers and Indigenous and traditional people are among the main affected groups, while violence in rural areas contributes to restricting access to adequate and healthy food. The novelties of our study lie in approaching food systems, taking access to food as the entry point and linking adverse effects of the soy-meat complex to inequalities in access to healthy food. The study also discusses value conflicts between “traditional” and “modern food” (e.g., ultra-processed food), reflecting intergenerational disputes between ways of life and culture, which are also nurtured by the expansion of the soy-meat complex. These multi-scale dynamics have significant repercussions on how food is produced and circulated and highlight the relations between local food politics and conflicts, as well as their connections with processes beyond the local scale. Finally, the article calls for advancing integrated and multi-scale analysis of food production and access to address challenges of social injustices in food system transitions, fostering sustainability, human health and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The COVID-19 pandemic pushed millions of Americans into food insecurity. Food policy councils (FPCs) across the country played a vital role in organizing coordinated food responses across multiple sectors. We used a social network analysis (SNA) approach to investigate: (1) the network of partnering organizations and agencies within FPCs; (2) how the characteristics of FPCs’ network partnerships (i.e., degree, coreness, and density) related to programmatic, policy, and advocacy actions in response to the pandemic; and (3) how FPCs’ use of a racial or social equity framework shifted their network partnerships and responses. Local government agencies and food supply chain actors were core in FPCs’ network partnerships, while public utilities, correctional facilities, social justice groups, and others were non-core partners. Network density was more likely to be associated with any action by FPCs, and it was especially pronounced for advocacy actions taken by FPCs; trends were similar among FPCs that reported using a racial or social equity framework. The findings begin to uncover core actors in FPCs’ partnerships and opportunities to establish new partnerships, particularly with social justice groups. The results also suggest that network density (interconnectedness) may be more important than other network characteristics when responding to food-related needs.

(English) This doctoral research develops the issue of just agroecological transitions in the food system and develops two case studies in the Global North and Global South. Based on the framework developed to analyze sustainable transitions, i.e., the theoretical framework of the multilevel perspective (MLP) is considered one of the most widely used frameworks of analysis to understand the multidimensional complexity of transitions. Transitions in MLP are defined as the change from one Regime to another, and as the result of the interaction of three levels of action: Niche-Regime-Landscape. Based on this approach, works have been developed on the analysis of how the change promoted by transitions from one system to another can generate profound social change and at the same time new social and environmental injustices and vulnerabilities. Also, based on the MLP the groecological transitions approach is developed, offering an integration of knowledge, combining science, movement, and practice to achieve sustainable, equitable and just food systems. In both theoretical proposals, elements for analysis converge in relation to traditional agroecological knowledge (epistemic justice) and gender approaches (gender justice). In the case of this doctoral dissertation research, we consider the epistemic justice and gender justice two elements indispensable and fundamental to integrate in the analysis of the processes aimed at transforming food systems towards more sustainable, healthy, and just ones. In addition, in order to understand and identify how the dynamics between gender and traditional agroecological knowledge have been explored, the critical elements that influence the adaptation, modification and transmission of knowledge, and to make visible the different experiences that men and women have within agri-food systems through a gender lens, a literature review is developed presenting diverse case studies at the Global level. Finally, based on the theoretical perspective of MLP, just transitions and agroecological transitions, two case studies are addressed. The first one located in Santa Isabel Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, Global South, where the main challenges and enablers of a just agroecological transition within the agrofood systems are explored. Also, we identify the traditional knowledge and its characteristics according to gender. The second case study is located in the city of Barcelona, Global North, where it is explored how the Niches-Regime-Landscape of the city interact for the transformation of the food system, as well as the way in which the gender perspective, knowledge and feminism are addressed within the actions between the Niches and the Regime. (Català) Aquest treball de recerca doctoral desenvolupa l'anàlisi de la temàtica de les transicions agroecològiques justes dins dels sistemes agroalimentaris, i analitza el gènere i els coneixements tradicionals ressaltant la seva importància com a elements imprescindibles en els processos de transició. Entre els marcs desenvolupats per a analitzar les transicions sostenibles, es troba el marc teòric de la perspectiva multi-nivell (MLP per les seves sigles en anglès), que és sens dubte un dels marcs d'anàlisis més utilitzades per a comprendre la complexitat multidimensional de les transicions en diferents sectors, inclòs l'agroalimentari. Sobre la base del MLP les transicions es defineixen com el canvi d'un Règim a un altre, com a resultat de la interacció de tres nivells d'acció: Nínxols-Règim-Paisatge. A partir d'aquest enfocament MLP, s'han desenvolupat treballs que aborden les transicions justes, és a dir, l'anàlisi de com el canvi promogut per les transicions d'un sistema a un altre pot generar un profund canvi social i al mateix temps noves injustícies i vulnerabilitats. Sobre la base del MLP, també es desenvolupa l'enfocament de les transicions agroecològiques, des d'on s'ofereix una integració de coneixements, combinant ciència, moviment i pràctica per a aconseguir sistemes alimentaris sostenibles, equitatius i justos. En totes dues propostes teòriques s'observa que convergeixen elements en relació al rol dels coneixements agroecològics tradicionals (justícia epistèmica) i enfocaments de gènere (justícia de gènere) per a una transició justa. Per al cas d'aquesta tesi doctoral, considerem aquests dos elements com a indispensables i fonamentals a integrar en l'anàlisi dels processos encaminats a transformar els sistemes alimentaris feia uns més sostenibles, saludables i justos. Per a això, amb la finalitat de comprendre i identificar com s'han explorat les dinàmiques entre el gènere i el coneixement tradicional, es desenvolupa una revisió bibliogràfica. A més, s'aborden dos casos d'estudi al Nord i el Sud Global. El primer es localitza en el Municipi de Santa Isabel Cholula, Pobla, Mèxic, el Sud Global, on s'identifiquen els coneixements tradicionals i les seves característiques en funció del gènere, i s'exploren les principals problemàtiques i habilitadors d'una transició agroecològica justa dins dels sistemes agroalimentaris de la zona. Entre los marcos desarrollados para analizar las transiciones sostenibles, se encuentra el marco teórico de la perspectiva multi-nivel (MLP por sus siglas en inglés), que es sin duda uno de los marcos de análisis más utilizados para comprender la complejidad multidimensional de las transiciones en diferentes sectores, incluido el agroalimentario. En base al MLP las transiciones se definen como el cambio de un Régimen a otro, como resultado de la interacción de tres niveles de acción: Nichos-Régimen-Paisaje. A partir de este enfoque MLP, se han desarrollado trabajos que abordan las transiciones justas, es decir, el análisis de cómo el cambio promovido por las transiciones de un sistema a otro puede generar un profundo cambio social y al mismo tiempo nuevas injusticias y vulnerabilidades. En base al MLP, también se desarrolla el enfoque de las transiciones agroecológicas, desde donde se ofrece una integración de conocimientos, combinando ciencia, movimiento y práctica para lograr sistemas alimentarios sostenibles, equitativos y justos. En ambas propuestas teóricas se observa que convergen elementos en relación al rol de los conocimientos agroecológicos tradicionales (justicia epistémica) y enfoques de género (justicia de género) para una transición justa. Para el caso de esta tesis doctoral, consideramos estos dos elementos como indispensables y fundamentales a integrar en el análisis de los procesos encaminados a transformar los sistemas alimentarios hacía unos más sostenibles, saludables y justos. Para ello, con la finalidad de comprender e identificar cómo se han explorado las dinámicas entre el género y el conocimiento tradicional, se desarrolla una revisión bibliográfica. Además, se abordan dos casos de estudio en el Norte y el Sur Global.
