Survey research in operations management: historical analyses

Abstract: Our paper provides a comprehensive assessment of 285 survey research articles in operations management (OM), published between 1980 and 2000. Six OM journals are included in this study; they are, in alphabetical order: Decision Sciences (DS), International Journal of Operations & Production Management (IJOPM), International Journal of Production Research (IJPR). “…This approach is not devoid of the possibility of inflated empirical relationships, a situation which limits the applicability of the findings at supply chain level (B. Fynes et al, 2008;Molnár et al, 2010;Narasimhan & Jayaram, 1998;Rungtusanatham, Choi, Hollingworth, Wu, & Forza, 2003;Wu et al, 2010). Measuring supply chain level performance is important because: i) it assists in gauging supply chain member's contribution to SCP; ii) it helps to rationalize the continuation of participation of supply chain members; and iii) it forms the basis for understanding the sharing of joint net benefits among supply chain members.…”

“…Our review of the burgeoning literature on the use of survey methods in business and management research reveals that the issue of RR is a contentious one (Malhotra and Grover 1998;Roth and BeVier, 1998;Baruch, 1999;Rungtusanatham et al, 2003;Baruch and Holom, 2008). On the one hand, RR is an important dimension in the assessment of the soundness of a study using a survey method.…”

“…The survey is a very important method in the operations management field, especially in the case of theory development and theory testing (Forza, 2002). Since the 1980s, there has been a growing trend toward designing and executing surveys in operations management research (Rungtusanatham et al, 2003). Operations strategy, quality management, and supply chain management are among the top three subfields of operations management, in which the survey method has been widely applied (Karlsson, 2009).…”
