Surgery for carcinoma of the breast in women over 70 years of age

Abstract: A review of 100 women over 70 years of age treated for breast carcinoma is reported. The short- and long-term results of treatment were evaluated with a median follow up of 4.7 years. Due to our aggressive approach, only 11% of this group died from breast cancer, and the 5-year survival rate was 51%, including all stages of the disease. The result of this study indicates that elderly women with breast cancer should be treated by surgical methods that offer the best chance of cure, regardless of patient's age.

“…Older patients in good health can tolerate expeditious mastectomy with an operative risk similar to that of younger patients.i'' Hunt et al 2 l showed that the average mortality rate in older patients undergoing mastectomy is less than 1%. A similar finding was reported by Amsterdam et aJ.. 22 In our study, there were no operative mortalities, and the rate of morbidity (8.4%) was acceptable, mainly related to shortterm wound complications.…”

“…Nevertheless, it remains clear that invasive breast cancer in any age group requires adequate treatment in order to achieve maximum survival and, furthermore, when women 70 years or over are so treated, there is no increase in morbidity and the 5 year survival rate is similar to women under 70 years of age (Amsterdam et al, 1987). The findings in this paper do not suggest that breast cancer in the elderly warrants less aggressive treatment than that for the young.…”

“…It is imperative to weigh the benefits and risks of the method of treatments with consideration of the sequelae of the aging processes in elderly patient with Stage IV breast carcinoma [3,4]. Elazar et al revealed the results of study that elderly women with breast cancer should be treated by surgical methods that offer the best chance of cure regardless of the patient's age.…”

“…However, elderly women should be generally treated in a more conservative manner than younger women. In advanced stage of cancer, simple mastectomy is done for palliative purposes [4]. Associated illnesses were of particular concern because of the impact on surgical risks as well as the quality of life in elderly patient.…”
