Surface-texturing of sapphire by femtosecond laser pulses for photonic applications

Abstract: We demonstrate that F+ centres (oxygen vacancy with a trapped electron) are induced by femtosecond laser scribing of a crystalline Al2O3 wafer and that they can be fully annealed at 1100 °C. The corresponding photoluminescence band at 325 nm which is induced by the femto second laser structuring of a sapphire surface is extinct after heat treatment. Thermal activation of oxygen diffusion in sapphire can explain the observation. The potential of pre-textured sapphire in lighting and micro-optical applications i… Show more

“…[1][2][3][4] In particular, many efforts are focused on the control of the grain size, shape, porosity, texture, and density in order to understand and precisely tune their mechanical properties. Despite the numerous reported works on preparing ceramic alumina, very few of them are, however, addressing the correlation between processing, microstructure, and properties.…”

“…[1][2][3] Generally, sapphire is brittle and its brittle-to-ductile transition temperature is ∼1373 K. However, the plastic deformation of sapphire crystals may occur under low loads at room temperature. 4 Recently, the evaluation of the initial stages of plasticity and elastic-plastic deformation properties of sapphire with different surface orientations at room temperature have been extensively investigated by nanoindentation tests.…”

“…Here, we employ a femtosecond (fs)-laser irradiation technique 18,19 to create optically active color centers in c-BN. Using confocal microscopy and time resolved measurements, we show that the formed voids are extremely a) SJuodkazis@swin.edu.au bright PL sources and originates from the N-vacancy related radiation center RC-defects 20 observed earlier in c-BN only by high energy particle or ionising radiation exposure 21 .…”
