In the last ten years, the latest acute economic crisis of global capitalism has put in check most of the institutional pillars of the post-Keynesian consensus: globalization, free trade, free movement of capital and labor, and so on. Status quo response to the crisis was the enforcement of austerity economic models, cutting public budgets and curbing public services. Those economic models remain the dominant ways of thinking in the post-2008 crisis (Davis, 2009). Austerity was not only prescribed to the indebted economies of the Global South, but also to the gigantic powers of the North: Western Europe and North America. It was not by chance that various movements of anti-capitalism and neoliberal policies erupted, such as "Occupy Wall Street" in the United States and the "15-M Outraged Movement" in Spain, bringing together a group of actors who demanded a radical transformation of order, the end of economic austerity programs, and the reduction of social inequalities. Attention and interest in the movements contesting the capitalist order grew not only among the general public, but also within the academic circuit, not least in the area of business management. After a sustained and deep criticism of the inability of conventional literature to transcend traditional models of capitalist organizations responsible for deepening inequalities and maintaining the economic crisis, it seems that there is a movement to search for alternative ways of organizing capitalism in a more humane way, with greater attention to social, economic and environmental sustainability of organizations. As a consequence, literature around the topic of organizing alternatives to capitalism has gained traction among scholars in business and organizational theory. This article explores ‘research-as-craft’ as a sensitizing concept for disclosing the presence of ethics and politics, as well as embodiment and imagination, in the doing and representation of scientific activity. Routinely unnoticed, marginalized or suppressed in methodology sections of articles and methodology textbooks, research-as-craft gestures towards messy, tacit, uncertain, yet rarely thematized, practices that are central to getting science done. To acknowledge and address the significance of research-as-craft in knowledge production, we show how it relates to three forms of reflexivity – constitutive, epistemic and disruptive. Through this we demonstrate the craftiness that is required when struggling with the indeterminacy that is endemic to the production and communication of scientific knowledge. By showing how empirical situations require imaginative interpretation by embodied researchers, we argue that our conception of research-as-craft facilitates appreciation of scientific inquiry as an indexical activity that involves the crafted object and the researcher in an ethico-political process of co-constituting knowledge.

Activist brands commonly engage in controversies to redefine which opinions and ideas are acceptable to express publicly. We conceptualize this practice as free speech boundary work. How can activist brands negotiate the boundaries of free speech to authenticate their activist positioning? By conducting a comparative case study of 18 activist brands, we identify three controversial strategies—creating monstrous hybrids, challenging the establishment, and demonstrating exemplarity—each of them challenging the boundaries of free speech through a distinct mechanism. The results show that whether these strategies authenticate brands’ activism depends on their ability to communicate brands’ moral competency, defined in terms of moral sensitivity, moral vision, and moral integration. This study contributes to the literature on brand activism by proposing an integrative framework that articulates the mechanisms underlying the reformative power of controversial brand activism. Second, we contribute to the literature on brand activism authentication by introducing a competency‐oriented view that reveals the heterogeneous and multidimensional nature of activism authenticity and expands our conception of the spectrum of moral territories with which activist brands can engage.
