Purpose In spite of the government’s support for small-scale rice farmers in rural areas of Thailand, several problems still affect their production and marketing performance. This study aims to assess a rice production community enterprise (RPCE) through an in-depth investigation of its problems and capabilities; and formulate internal strategic guidelines for enterprise development. Design/methodology/approach This study used a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with the community enterprise leader and committee members, and focus group discussion with eight farmer-members, purposively selected in Chachoengsao, Thailand. Data were transcribed, sorted and organised to determine themes and patterns. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and threats, opportunities, weaknesses and strengths (TOWS) matrix situational analyses were done to develop strategic options. Strategic guidelines were formulated through a final deliberation with all members to ensure strategies aligned with the enterprise’s goals and objectives. Findings The results have identified three main problem categories encountered by the community enterprise in the areas of membership and labour; production and milling operations; and product design and marketing. The enterprise’s main strengths and opportunities include its product certifications and support from external organisations. Strategic points were developed, and policy support programmes are recommended for capacity building and product development as most problems identified relate to these aspects. Originality/value The utility of this study is its focus on an RPCE. The findings will help policymakers and concerned government agencies implement better programmes and policies to develop RPCEs. Furthermore, this study will be a source for future qualitative literature that will provide helpful information to other studies aiming to develop other types of community enterprises (CEs).

Managing risk in the agricultural supply chain is more complex and challenging than other commodities due to its perishable characteristic and production nature, primarily based on unpredictable weather conditions and uncontrollable biological processes. This study analyses the agricultural supply chain risk in Penajam Paser Utara Regency, one of the granaries for East Kalimantan Province. A total of 25 risks have been identified and prioritized by fuzzy FMEA, where these risks are divided into eight supply risks, 12 manufacturer risks, and five demand risks. The mitigation strategies give five options: (1) branding image, (2) market penetration, (3) partnership, (4) preventive maintenance, and (5) production capacity to choose from. Using the Analytical Network Process (ANP) method, the priority order of mitigation strategies is to adjust production capacity weighing 35,5%.

Successfully managing the supply chain, which has become complex with many factors such as changes in customer demands, social perception, ease of access to information, advances in technology, increasing needs, and changing environmental conditions, provides great convenience to businesses. Effective supply chain and all operations management in this chain has great importance for retailers, which play a key role in the distribution of products and services to the end consumer. Vending machines, which are called the customers of retailers in a vendor-managed system, are among the distribution channels that are widely used in delivering products or services to the end consumer. The study, it is aimed to make a risk assessment for product distribution to vending machines. For this purpose, the Best Worst method, which is one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making methods, is used to determine and evaluate supply risks. As a result of the evaluation of the nine risk criteria determined for the study according to the method, the risks that should be considered primarily are determined as "Errors in demand tracking", "Qualitative and quantitative inadequacies compared to competitors", "Insufficient vehicle compartment and capacity".
