Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Potato (Solanum tuberosum) Peels

Abstract: In the last three decades, greener technologies have been used, aiming at extracting phenolic compounds from vegetable matrices due to the inherent advantages compared to organic solvent-based methodologies. In this work, supercritical CO2 was investigated for recovering phenolic acids from potato peels. Following screening runs for assessing the significant extraction parameters, a Central Composite Design of Experiments was carried out aiming at process optimization, with methanol concentration (MeOH, %) and… Show more

“…In other words, the presence of anthocyanins in potato tubers may mark also an increment of additional beneficial phenolic compounds, including CGAs, due to the upregulated activity of the same transcriptional regulator. According to de Andrade Lima et al [31], tuber peel largely contributes to total phenolic compounds. In our samples, peels contributed 30% to the total amount of CGA detected, especially in the tubers of colored varieties (i.e., Magenta Love, Scano di Montiferro and Violet Queen).…”

“…Various studies have been conducted to determine the suitability of extracting bioactive compounds using SC-CO 2 process. For example, some researchers have focused on the extraction of plant materials [76], such as tomato [77], watermelon [78], sweet paprika [79], potato peels [80], and wheat bran [81].…”
