Underwater swarm robotics has gained prominence as an innovative paradigm for diverse applications, including environmental monitoring and marine exploration. This review paper presents a comprehensive review of low-cost underwater swarm acoustic localization systems, focusing on recent research findings validated through field experiments. To aid research on the concept of low-cost swarm acoustic localization, this article provides overview of cost-effective underwater swarm applications and the applicability assessment of traditional acoustic localization strategies, then presents several crucial components for building an acoustic ranging-based low-cost swarm localization system, including lowcost acoustic modems and low-cost swarm localization system with cooperative strategies. In summary, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in underwater swarm robotics and acoustic localization, addressing challenges, strategies, and goals of low-cost swarm acoustic localization systems.

Contrasting the Radio Frequency (RF) or Electro Magnetic (EM) wave based terrestrial network communication technologies, acoustic communication on UnderwaterSensor Networks (UWSNs) add a unique set of challenges due their long propagation delays, low data rates, and high transmit power. Due to characteristic of basic acoustic nature and hence require an entire redesign in all the layer of network protocol stack. Most importantly, the current established network technology that were developed for conventional terrestrial wireless sensor networks (TWSNs) are not suitable for directly applying them in underwater scenarios. Due to this reason, the research in network technology of UWSNs has been underway to overcome the lack of available network technology in UWSNs. In this work, we are going to study some of the available simulators for simulating a UWSNs environment and enlighten the reasons for selecting Aqua-Sim and Aqua-3D for our underwater network simulations. In this research, the performance of the basic routing protocols in Aqua-Sim such as Underwater Flooding (UWFlooding), Vector-Based Forwarding (VBF), and Hop-by-Hop Vector-Based Forwarding Protocol (HH-VBF) is evaluated with the metrics packet delivery ratio (PDR), cumulative delay, throughput and energy consumption under dense network environment. The result of our study showed that VBF and HH-VBF are performed better in terms of PDR, cumulative delay and energy consumption, while UWFlooding is performed better in terms of cumulative delay.

Summary In the last decade, underwater wireless sensor networks have been widely studied because of their peculiar aspects that distinguish them from common terrestrial wireless networks. Their applications range from environmental monitoring to military defense. The definition of efficient routing protocols in underwater sensor networks is a challenging topic of research because of the intrinsic characteristics of these networks, such as the need of handling the node mobility and the difficulty in balancing the energy consumed by the nodes. Depth‐based routing protocol is an opportunistic routing protocol for underwater sensor networks, which provides good performance both under high and low node mobility scenarios. The main contribution of our work is presenting a novel simulator for studying depth‐based routing protocol and its variants as well as novel routing protocols. Our simulator is based on AquaSim–Next Generation, which is a specialized tool for studying underwater networks. With our work, we improve the state of the art of underwater routing protocol simulators by implementing, among other features, a detailed cross‐layer communication and an accurate model of the operational modes of acoustic modem and their energy consumption. The simulator is open source and freely downloadable. Moreover, we propose a novel and completely distributed routing protocol, named residual energy–depth‐based routing. It takes into account the residual energy at the nodes' batteries to select the forwarder nodes and improve the network lifetime by providing a more uniform energy consumption among them. We compare its performance with that of depth‐based routing protocol and a receiver‐based routing protocol implementing a probabilistic opportunistic forwarding scheme.
