Suggesting Indicators of Superficiality and Purity in Verbal Aggressiveness: An Application in Adult Education Class Networks of Prison Inmates

Abstract: Aim of this research is to suggest indicators, based on social network analysis, that distinguish superficial, idiosyncratic and strategic verbal aggressiveness. Two classes of an adult education school (at secondary level) in a prison have been selected as network samples (A class = 23 and B class = 12 prisoners). Complete network analysis has been applied, using standardized questionnaires. The network variables have further processed through Pearson correlation. Indicators of superficial and pure roles, par… Show more

“…Each one of them was composed a network and a non-network part. The network part questionnaire was based on previous similar questionnaires (Bekiari & Digelidis, 2015;Papaioannou, 1998;, 2016c. However, it was enhanced by the Popitz model of power (1992).…”

“…a champion's level of competition); however, it should also be noticed that verbal aggressiveness make athletes less willing to contact with their coach. Verbal aggressiveness has also been extensively examined with network analysis (Bekiari, Deliligka, & Koustelios, 2017;, 2016cBekiari & Spuropoulou, 2016;Theoharis, Bekiari, & Koustelios, 2017). These analyses have revealed deep-rooted structures of aggressiveness behaviour.…”

“…These are expected to indicate incidental, impulsive and adaptive behavior, respectively, and have been suggested, theoretically supported and empirically tested in previous research [41]. The "superficial" aggression is just the percentage of aggressive actions from each person to the others to the whole actions (relations) constituting the aggressiveness network (outdegree).…”

“…The "superficial" aggression is just the percentage of aggressive actions from each person to the others to the whole actions (relations) constituting the aggressiveness network (outdegree). The so-called "idiosyncratic" aggression is the difference between the aggressive actions practiced by a person to the others and the aggressive actions he receives from them (indegree + Katz status + pagerank + authority) calculated either directly and superficially as first target (indegree-the inverted vertices of outdegree), or in accumulative forms (chains of successive actions), calculated with particular network algorithms such as Katz status, pagerank and authority [41]. (These network algorithms are not described in details here, as they are widely accessible in several articles and websites.…”
