Successful Treatment of Thyroid Carcinoma Invading the Trachea as a Single-Stage Procedure: A Case Report

Abstract: Objective: Locally advanced thyroid carcinoma is relatively rare; extrathyroid extension, such as to the trachea, is one of the most important prognostic factors. Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment, and appropriate surgical planning is crucial for obtaining a reasonable prognosis and quality of life of the patients. Case Report: Herein, we report a case of advanced thyroid carcinoma involving the trachea. Total thyroidectomy and window resection of the trachea were performed. The tracheal defect w… Show more

“…The brief overview of published articles on tracheal sparing surgery studies reflects, in fact, that there are no commercially produced implants for a wide clinical practice in cases of extensive lesions of the trachea. Since it is a mobile organ when breathing, swallowing, speaking, eating etc., it is critical to raise standards regarding the material selection for the replacement [10]. To succeed, clinicians should make their unconventional choice of what approach to use and how to perform the correct reconstruction.…”

“…Another method for simpler cases was segmental resection of the tracheal and end to end anastomosis. If the case were too advanced, total laryngectomy and permanent tracheotomy would likely to be done [ 23 ].…”

“…Shigemitsu et al, [ 22 ] reported a successful case also with a partial tracheal resection with latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap reconstruction. Endo et al, [ 23 ] reported that a single staged thyroidectomy with auricular cartilage and sternohyoid reconstruction successfully cured the patient [ 24 ]. In Tsai et al, [ 24 ] study, thyroid and en bloc tracheal resection with end to end anastomosis is the treatment of choice of a thyroid tumour invading the trachea.…”
