In the last two decades, new technologies have been introduced to equip wells with intelligent completions such as Inflow Control Device (ICD) or Inflow Control Valve (ICV) in order to optimize the oil recovery by reducing the undesirable production of gas and water. To optimally define the locations of the packers and the characteristics of the valves, efficient reservoir simulation models are required. This paper is aimed at presenting the specific developments introduced in a multipurpose industrial reservoir simulator to simulate such wells equipped with intelligent completions taking into account the pressure drop and multiphase flow. An explicit coupling or decoupling of a reservoir model and a well flow model with intelligent completion makes usually unstable and non-convergent results, and a fully implicit coupling is CPU time consuming and difficult to be implemented. This paper presents therefore a semi-implicit approach, which links on one side to the reservoir simulation model and on the other side to the well flow model, to integrate ICD and ICV.

Control of Reservoir Heterogeneity in SAGD Bitumen Processes

Uniform steam chamber growth (conformance) in a Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process promotes enhanced bitumen recovery, project economics and environmental benefits. In the past, operators have implemented numerous alternative strategies to improve steam conformance in the SAGD process. Simultaneous injection in the inner tubing and annular space or use of dual-tubing completions are commonly used to provide some degree of injection control at the heel- and toe-regions of the horizontal well pair. However, this does not necessarily guarantee the uniformity and performance efficiencies sought. Distributed flow control devices (FCDs) can also contribute to more uniform production and injection. They can be incorporated in the horizontal production completion as restrictive elements to modify the pressure distribution along the length of the wellbore. A hybrid of these two technologies is proposed to provide superior (uniform and efficient) steam chamber development that benefits asset performance in highly heterogeneous bitumen reservoirs. It has been shown that using Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) feedback to control the steam injection can be beneficial. The feedback control is applied to each steam injection point in the horizontal well pair. Injection at these control points is regulated by a PID feedback controller which monitors temperature differences between injected and produced fluids in order to both enforce a specified subcool and to achieve uniform production along the entire length of the producer. This paper examines detailed wellbore simulations of a SAGD well pair with an FCD completion in the producer and PID controlled steam injection with dual tubing strings. A synthetic reservoir model, based on logs from the Athabasca region of Alberta, is employed and represents a highly heterogeneous formation with properties typical of a bitumen resource. Feedback controlled steam injection (FCSI) can be dynamically configured to target the worst-offending regions of the well pair in order to (i) start the PID control as early as possible after switchover, (ii) achieve a specified subcool target in those regions that would benefit most from the subcool and (iii) temporarily ignore regions which are bypassed and difficult to produce, but which may be dynamically included at a later time. Practical algorithms are presented to achieve these goals, based on existing technology.

In order to maximize oil production, it is desirable to have a balanced influx of oil from the entire completion. Non-uniform production rates from each zone along the completion may not be evident early in the well’s production life, but they can become problematic when water and gas break through. If water and gas break through in select zones, they will produce at higher rates than the oil, which in turn will impede oil production rates from the remaining zones. Formation permeability variations or toe-to-heel friction loss can cause flow rate differences between zones, and in a heavy-oil well, these variations may be even greater. Viscous fluids experience larger frictional losses both in the formation and the wellbore flow conduit; thus, when low viscosity water or gas breaks through, the flow from a high water or gas cut zone can quickly dominate the flow from the well. Inflow Control Devices (ICDs) have been developed to balance the influx of oil by creating additional back-pressure in the zones that produce at higher rates. Using ICDs can delay water or gas breakthrough, but once unwanted fluids break through, conventional passive ICDs are not able to maintain the balanced flow. This paper discusses a new ICD, an autonomous inflow control device (AICD), which performs similar to a passive ICD during oil production and can be used to balance reservoir influx. Unlike passive ICDs, when unwanted fluids (water, gas) flow through the AICD, they take a different path than oil, and a much higher pressure drop is created. This behavior can be used to restrict the flow of unwanted fluids when they break through in a zone, allowing the oil production from other zones in a well to continue at the maximum rate. Simulations are presented that will compare a stand-alone screen completion to a completion with passive ICDs, to a completion with an autonomous ICD. The simulation results will show a clear distinction in each type of completion, and it will highlight the benefits that are provided with the ICD and the even greater benefits derived from use of the AICD, both onshore and offshore.
