Study on the Pulmonary Delivery System of Apigenin-Loaded Albumin Nanocarriers with Antioxidant Activity

Abstract: This study provides evidence to support that albumin nanoparticles are suitable carriers of Api and the use of traditional or novel excipients should be taken into consideration. The developed BSA-Api-NPs are a novel delivery system against lung injury with potential antioxidant activity.

“…Though apigenin is a relatively small molecule that has been shown to cross the BBB, the intranasal delivery of apigenin, which bypasses the BBB and can gain entry in to the cerebrospinal fluid compartment via the olfactory pathway [185], could be explored to achieve therapeutic dosages of apigenin delivered directly to the CNS. An inhalable formulation of albumin nanoparticles loaded with apigenin has been constructed for the delivery of apigenin to lung tissue [186]. Effective anti-oxidant properties against lung injury were reported with this delivery system, making it a viable inhalable drug formulation.…”

“…Apigenin has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries because of its physiological functions as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory [ 6 , 7 ], its role in lowering blood pressure [ 8 ], and its antibacterial and antiviral properties [ 9 ]. In addition to those effects, apigenin was proven to have tumor suppression efficacy in the last few decades (Fig.…”

“…The main advantage is that particle formation occurs in a single-step continuous and scalable process (Lee et al, 2011). However, there is little published information regarding the production of nanoparticles by nano spray drying (Li et al, 2010;Pápay et al, 2017;Tewa-Tagne, Briançon, Fessi, 2007).…”
