Study on the effect of off-axis initiation on the jet forming process and armour-breaking performance of shaped charges

Abstract: To study the effect of off-axis initiation on shaped charge performance. The nonlinear finite element software LS-DYNA is used to simulate the jet forming and armour-breaking process under different initiation offsets (0.025~0.125Dk, Dk is shaped charge diameter). A theoretical model is established to analyse the lateral velocity distribution of jet. The results show that the degree of asymmetric collapse and lateral velocity of jet increase with the offset.
