Study on Supercapacitor Energy Saving System for Rubber-Tyred Gantry Crane

Abstract: In order to solve the problem that the existing Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) Crane consumes massive generating/braking energy through resistance, produces plenty of heat ,causes excessive fuel consumption and exhaust emission during working, the relation of energy flows of the existing system is analyzed and the value of the improvement of energy saving is confirmed in the paper. Firstly, the constitution and principle of the RTG energy saving system are proposed. In addition, the topology and principle of the bi… Show more

“…The CRESS ESS is flywheel based, which has also been examined by Flynn et al [11,33]. Flywheels are not the only type of ESS technology being examined for this application, batteries and super capacitor based systems, as well as hybrid solutions are also under investigation and implementation [34][35][36]. Another solution to utilise this otherwise dissipated energy on an electric RTG is to modify the pre-existing power system to include an active front end, such that the power can be regenerated back into the local grid.…”

“…A research group of the Chinese Air Force Radar Academy in Wuhan [9] [10] [11], has studied an RTG Crane with supercapacitors to store energy proposing a DC/DC bidirectional converter and a voltage equalization method. This study is also based on simulations of a concept and no experimental data are provided, either of the crane or the hybrid drive operation.…”

“…Meanwhile, the market for container port handling technology and container handling equipment puts forward many new topics that are worth studying. [1]. When the traditional lifting equipment working, it can store a large number of potential energy with the crane hoisting heavy objects; as the heavy objects falling, it can drive the motor though mechanical equipment and produce braking power generating phenomenon [2].…”
