Study of Soil Resistivity Measurements in Vertical Two-Layer Soil Model

Abstract: This paper studies and estimates soil resistivity parameters of two-layer vertical soil as a one of the practical soil models. Wenner method is used to measure the apparent soil resistivity. To achieve this study, the image method is proposed to consider the presence of vertical layer soil and four electrodes of the Wenner method. A general apparent resistivity expression is proposed to find the relation between the apparent resistivity and the four electrodes of Winner method locations and soil parameters. Th… Show more

“…The resulting distribution of soil resistivity can thus be highly non-uniform. Therefore, in the literature, several research investigations have been reported in which two-layer soil scenarios were studied for steady state performance and resistivity measurements [1][2][3][4][5]. However, the high impulse current performance and the soil ionization phenomenon have not been extensively investigated with two-layer soils.…”

“…The presence of vertical layer ground had been studied before by many researchers [18][19][20][21][22]. The outlook for four electrode method results in vertical layer ground is similar to that of horizontal results. If four electrodes were buried in a two-vertical layer ground, a relation between the experiment physical dimensions, ground parameters and apparent ground resistivity measurements will be as follows [22]:…”

“…The measured soil resistivity will be an indication of the average soil resistivity over a larger area [41]. If the penetration depth b is very small compared to a and R is the resistance, the resistivity ρ can be calculated using [16, 25] ρnormalw=2πaR…”

“…Several works have been performed on soil resistivity measurement in different number of soil layers [14][15][16][17][18]. The effect of buried metallic structure and nearby pipelines on the soil resistivity measurement depends on the measurement method, location of the measurement and the soil structure [19,20].…”
