Ficus carica L. have always been known by their power to cure various diseases. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity of twelve different extracts of three samples of dried ﬁgs. First, the extracts were tested for their polyphenolic, ﬂavonoid and tannin contents by the Folin–Ciocalteu, the aluminium trichloride and vanillin methods and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for more characterisation. The antioxidant activity was performed by using thre different methods; the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The results showed that the methanolic extract of Sidi Bendjebbar sample presented a higher TPC value (458 mg GAE /g) while the acetonic and aqueous extracts of El-Keurt presented a higher values of TFC and CTC. In other hand, the methanol extract of El-Keurt sample exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity with an IC50 of 0.078 mg/ml. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts against various Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria was screened by the inhibition zone using the disc and diffusion assay, minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) by micro-well method allonwing to calculate the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC). The ethanolic extracts of the two samples El-Keurt and Sidi Bendjebbar were the most effective extracts being able to inhibit the growth of the majority of the strains tested. Our study supported the use of these fruit as supplements for nutrient deficiencies and for combating diseases associated with oxydative damage or some microbial infection for better drug alternatives.

Satureja khuzistanica is an endemic herb growing wild in Iran with interesting pharmacological and biological properties. Here, as an initial step of the domestication process, the variability of phytochemical and morphological traits among 69 individuals of eight natural populations of the plant was studied. The investigated characteristics were the essential oil content and composition, the rosmarinic acid (RA) content, and the leaf and flower morphologies. The Abdanan and Kaver populations showed the highest oil contents. The characterization by GC-FID and GC/MS analyses of the oils revealed that all 69 sampled individuals had carvacrol as the main component with very high contents (89.59-95.41%). The content of RA of the MeOH extracts of S. khuzistanica showed a high level of variability (coefficient of variation (CV) 50.0%) ranging from 0.59% (w/w) in the Paalam population to 1.81% (w/w) in the Abdanan population. The peduncle length and the leaf surface area (CVs of 47.39 and 47.21%, resp.) were the most variable morphological characteristics among the examined populations. The high level of phytochemical and morphological variability among the studied populations suggests a breeding approach during the domestication, to gain new, promising, and homogenous cultivars, attractive for the industry and agriculture.

Background: The incidence of drug resistance against chemical antimicrobial drugs has directed the attention to the use of medicinal plants in the treatment of infections. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Ficus carica extracts against pathogenic bacteria, especially nosocomial infections. Methods: In this experimental study, aqueous and alcoholic extracts of F. carica were extracted. This study investigated inhibitory effects of plant extracts against pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Proteus mirabilis as well as pathogenic nosocomial including Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa through disk diffusion methods, well diffusion method, and microdilution. Serial dilutions of the extracts were prepared in the range of 50 to 1000 mg/mL to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration. Results: The aqueous extract of the plant showed higher inhibitory effects against microbial strains compared to the alcoholic extract. The two strains of S. saprophyticus and S. aureus indicated greater susceptibility than extracts (e.g., aqueous, methanol, and ethanol). Statistically, there was a significant difference in the minimum inhibitory concentration of aqueous extract growth compared to alcoholic extracts. The aqueous extract had a minimum inhibitory concentration of 133 mg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration of 200 mg/mL on gram-positive bacteria of S. saprophyticus and S. aureus, respectively. Conclusion: The study found F. carica that extract had significant effects on microorganisms of two gram-positive bacteria including S. saprophyticus (62 mm in diameter) and S. aureus (60 mm in diameter), and the bacterium P. aeruginosa revealed the highest resistance against gram-negative bacteria. The extracts also indicated significant effects compared to the antibiotics as a control. Although further research is needed in this regard, F. carica extract can be suggested as a new antimicrobial agent in medical research.
