Study and Comparison of Discontinuous Modulation for Modular Multilevel Converters in Motor Drive Applications

Abstract: Discontinuous modulation applied to modular multilevel converters is an effective method for reducing the capacitor voltage ripples. In this paper, the discontinuous modulation is adapted and used in a motor drive application. For proper operation of the converter, a new energy controller is presented, which is suitable for operation with non-sinusoidal reference signals. Experimental results comparing the discontinuous modulation with other techniques operating at low motor speeds are shown. The results demon… Show more

“…The voltage ripples can be suppressed by injecting the resonant-frequency voltage (vr). In (15), the interaction between the resonant-frequency voltage (vr) and ACcirculating current (ixr) generates constant power and resonantfrequency power components. The constant power component suppresses the low-frequency power fluctuation (the first and second terms on the right-hand side), so there are only resonant-frequency power components in each half-arm.…”

“…As seen in (15), the low-frequency power fluctuation is completely cancelled out by vrixr, so an injected current (ixr) with high amplitude flows through the flying-capacitors and switching devices. Thus, the amplitude of ixr can be reduced by controlling vrixr to follow the reference * * , which is expressed as:…”

“…In PWM operated three-phase electric drives, full DC-link voltage utilization can be achieved by means of (i) directly injecting the harmonic signal v * n to the fundamental reference voltages [25]- [27], or (ii) by using space vector modulation (SVM), where signal injection is inherent to the modulation process [26], [28], [29]. Both techniques add to the fundamental reference voltage a zero sequence signal (3rd, 9th, 15th.…”

“…With the development of power electronics technology, the modular multilevel converter (MMC) has received extensive attention [1][2][3]. In recent years, due to its modularity, scalability, high efficiency, good harmonic performance, fault blocking capability, etc., it has been used more and more in the industry [4][5][6][7][8], such as energy storage system, medium voltage and high power motor drive system, power distribution system, high voltage direct current transmission, and so on.…”
