The fact that parotid saliva has an anti-histamic action was proved by the experiments 1. in which the human parotid saliva obtained aseptically was tested in vitro (FUJIE), 2. in which the parotid glands of rats were extirpated (NAKAO) and 3. in which the parotid ducts of rats were ligated (FUJIKI). On the other hand, the fact that the parotin of OGATA which is a salivary preparation obtained from the parotid glands of cattle, is anti-histamic when a micro-dose of it was tested but is not so when a relatively large amount of it was tested, was proved by FUJIE, and accordingly there will be some question whether parotin is identical as regards its effects with parotid saliva or not.The author, here, attempted to prove the effects of parotin and of parotid saliva on the functional activities of the gastric peptic, the pancreatic and the liver cells, which are all very sensitive to histamine injections.
I. Materials and Methods.Adult and male rats, weighting 100-120g, accustomed to constant feeding with Mc COLLUM's artificial diet were used for the following experiments. The quantity of the medicine described below is always per 100g of rat's weight. 3-5 rats were used in each case.1. Solution of parotin 1mg, 1/100mg and 1/500mg was injected subcutaneously into rats while still unfed, then the diet was given. Smaples were taken 24 hrs. after the diet administration.2. The same experiment as 1. was repeated for a period of 5 and a period of 10 days. Samples were taken on the 6th and the 11th day, 24hrs. after the last diet.3. Solution of histamine dihydrochloride 3mg (described below as Histamine) was injected subcutaneously into rats while still unfed, then the diet was given. This was repeated for 10 days and samples were taken 24hrs, after the last administration.4. Mixture of histamine and parotin 1mg, 1/100mg, 1/500mg respectively was injected into rats when they were still unfed, then the diet was given. This 397
