“…Some authors describe a single lymphocyte type or lymphocyte-like cell (Weinberg et al, 1972;Williams and Warner, 1976;Elarifi, 1982;Hightower et al, 1984;Roubal, 1986;Kusuda and Ikeda, 1987) but usually both small and large lymphocytes representing different cell maturation stages are observed (Barber and Westermann, 1975;Etlinger et al, 1976;Ellis, 1977;Christensen et al, 1978;Cannon et al, 1980). In S. aurata we have characterized small and large lymphocytes showing ultrastructural features similar to those present in other vertebrates, mainly fish (Blaxhall, 1983;Savage, 1983;Cenini, 1984;Temmink and Bayne, 1987;Doggett and Harris, 1989;Fujimaki and Isoda, 1990).…”
