The use of antibiotics in the aquafeeds to mitigate infectious diseases or to boost growth performance is commonly practiced. Recently, the prophylactic use of antibiotics and chemotherapies have been criticized which eventually led to their ban in aquaculture by law on many countries. In view of the current restrictions on antibiotic use, there is a critical need to evaluate other possible alternatives. One potential substitute for antibiotics in aquafeeds is the use of functional feed additives. The present review is a comprehensive and an updated compilation of the available works on different feed additives, their examples, modes of action and useful applications for improving aquafeeds. It highlights several functional feed additives including probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, immunostimulants, organic acids, nucleotides and medicinal herbs. Apart from boosting aquafeeds and safeguarding general health of aquatic animals, some of these substances have been found to possess beneficial immunostimulant and anti‐stress relieving properties. Furthermore, the use of these natural substances increases the consumer confidence of farmed fish. Due care has been taken to cover the on‐going trends and recent advances with a perspective vision and their holistic usages and beneficial applications in aquatic animals’ systems. The current study also shed light regarding the management and production aspects of aquatic animals which will enlighten farmers and producers for better economic growth.
Biocides are chemical substances that can deter or kill the microorganisms responsible for biofouling. The rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry is having a significant impact on the marine ecosystems. As the industry expands, it requires the use of more drugs, disinfectants and antifoulant compounds (biocides) to eliminate the microorganisms in the aquaculture facilities. The use of biocides in the aquatic environment, however, has proved to be harmful as it has toxic effects on the marine environment. Organic booster biocides were recently introduced as alternatives to the organotin compounds found in antifouling products after restrictions were imposed on the use of tributyltin (TBT). The replacement products are generally based on copper metal oxides and organic biocides. The biocides that are most commonly used in antifouling paints include chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, DCOIT (4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, Sea-nine 211®), Diuron, Irgarol 1051, TCMS pyridine (2,3,3,6-tetrachloro-4-methylsulfonyl pyridine), zinc pyrithione and Zineb. There are two types of risks associated with the use of biocides in aquaculture: (i) predators and humans may ingest the fish and shellfish that have accumulated in these contaminants and (ii) the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This paper provides an overview of the effects of antifouling (AF) biocides on aquatic organisms. It also provides some insights into the effects and risks of these compounds on non-target organisms.
In this paper we optimize a flow cytometric method for evaluating the phagocytic activity of leucocytes in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) and characterize the phagocytic cells observed. Optimal conditions were established for the fluorescein-labelling and analysis of the bacterium Vibrio anguillarum by flow cytometry. Head-kidney leucocytes were incubated with the heat-killed fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled bacteria for different periods, during which the kinetics of phagocytosis was studied. Attached and interiorized bacteria were distinguished. Although phagocytic ability reached a maximum after 60 min, phagocytic capacity reached its maximum at 20 min. The amount of ingested bacteria per phagocyte was estimated from the mean fluorescence of the leucocytes. Cytochalasin B or colchicine was used to inhibit phagocytosis. Monocyte-macrophages and acidophilic granulocytes showed phagocytic activity as demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy. In conclusion, the technique presented allows the screening of thousands of cells, and individual cell evaluation, by quantifying interiorized particles in fish phagocytes. Our ultrastructural results demonstrate that V. anguillarum is actively phagocytized by seabream macrophages and acidophilic granulocytes.
Over the last few decades, the contribution of aquaculture to animal protein production has increased enormously, and the sector now provides almost half of the fish and shellfish consumed worldwide, making it a major food producer. Nevertheless, many factors, including infections, pollution, and stress, may result in significant economic losses. The aquaculture industry will not be totally successful without the therapeutic and preventive means to control all these factors. Antibiotics (long used in aquaculture practice) have tended to aggravate the problem by increasing antibiotic resistance. Concomitantly, probiotics have widely been suggested as eco-friendly alternatives to antibiotics. However, the way in which probiotics are applied in aquaculture is a key factor in their favorable performance. The aim of this review was to examine the current state of probiotics administration through the water in finfish aquaculture. The review also attempts to cover the research gaps existing in our knowledge of this administration mode, and to suggest the issues that need to be investigated in greater depth.
It is now a well-documented fact that there is a distinct relation between fish nutrition and health status. Intensification of aquaculture practice to meet market demand causes stress and elevates the risk of the disease outbreak. Therefore, provisions of proper diets as well as appropriate feeding regimens are of high importance in intensive aquaculture. Considering the negative impacts raised by prophylactic and therapeutic use of antibiotic in aquaculture, administration of dietary immunostimulant has been suggested as an alternative to antimicrobial agents. In this sense, functional dietary supplements, including pre-, pro-and synbiotic received increasing attention as an environment-friendly strategy for improving fish health. During the past years, administration of prebiotics in the diet of different fish species revealed promising results in immune response. In the present review article, the topic of the administration of dietary prebiotics in aquaculture is addressed with a special focus on recent findings regarding the effects of prebiotics on fish immune response and possible mode of action. Furthermore, the present study covers the gap in existing knowledge and suggests issues that merit further investigation.
