Background and objective: Internal fixation is recommended when the need is urgent for preserving the hip joint rather than replacing it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of complying with an educational intervention (booklet) and the discharge instructions on the outcomes of patients with internal fixation for hip fracture. Methods: Research hypothesis: Strength, hip range of motion, walking ability, managing stairs, and total indoor and outdoor activities will be better among the educational intervention group than the control group. Quasi-experimental (study/control) design was utilized to conduct this research, the intervention included training patients on postoperative exercises, showing them videos on these exercises and providing them with a written simplified, photo illustrated Arabic booklet containing the discharge instructions. Setting: The study was conducted in the orthopedic department and orthopedic outpatient clinic. Sample: Consisted of 60 adult male (63.3%) and female (36.7%) patients who underwent internal fixation for hip fracture who were randomly included as an intervention (n = 30) or control group (n = 30). Tools: A Structured patient interview questionnaire sheet was utilized for data collection with the following three parts (biosociodemographic data, compliance behavior index and functional capability index). Results: Of the intervention group participants (83.3%) were compliant while nearly all of the control group subjects were non-compliant (96.7%) at 3 months and a highly statistically significant difference was found between compliance behavior and patient's functional capability. Conclusion: Providing structured discharge guidelines for patients who underwent internal fixation for hip fracture was effective in improving outcomes of patients than the standard hospital instructions. Recommendations: Publication of the booklet and dissemination among patients with internal fixation for hip fracture on a larger probability sample is recommended.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe the quality of patient education in day surgery as evaluated by adult patients. Design: Descriptive design using survey methodology. Methods: The data were collected by questionnaire and measured the quality and implementation of education resources for day surgery patients (n=600) in a university hospital. The data were analyzed statistically using basic and multivariate methods. Findings: Half of respondents assessed the implementation of patient education to have been done in a patient-centered and goal-oriented way. Most respondents (81%) were satisfied with the interaction in the patient education. The education resources were reported as good by 77% of respondents. Conclusions: Greater account should be given in patient education to the patients' emotional wellbeing, feelings, their family members and patients' expertise in their own life. In developing patient education, the excellent knowledge and skills of health care staff in educating patients should be utilized.

Objetivo: Diseñar y validar una metodología para implementar el “Plan de egreso hospitalario” como mecanismo de apoyo en el cuidado de la salud de personas con enfermedad crónica (EC) y sus cuidadores familiares (CF) en Colombia.Metodología: Estudio de tipo descriptivo cuyo desarrollo contó con los siguientes pasos:1) Consolidación de una guía. 2) Validación del proceso propuesto para la implementación del “Plan de egreso hospitalario”. 3) Prueba piloto de implementación. Resultados: Con base en el estado del arte y la definición de pasos del cuidado que se requieren para el alta hospitalaria se propone una guía de acción basada en la revisión de las condiciones de la institución hospitalaria y en el nivel de competencia para el cuidado en el hogar de los usuarios, buscando garantizar un cuidado continuo y seguro al salir de la institución. Conclusiones: La Metodología utilizada para desarrollar el “Plan de egreso hospitalario” para personas con enfermedad crónica en Colombia que se elaboró y validó en el presente estudio aporta elementos conceptuales y de procedimiento para implementar y sistematizar un programa de alta hospitalaria con base en el fortaleciendo de las condiciones institucionales y de la competencia de cuidado por parte de las personas con EC y sus CF. Dicha metodología constituye una herramienta para ayudar a disminuir la carga del cuidado de la EC en Colombia.
