Objective: The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of teaching patients stretching neck exercises on pain and disability of the neck following thyroidectomy. Methods: Research design: a randomized controlled trial was utilized. Setting: the study was conducted at the general surgery ward and outpatient surgery clinic-Assiut university hospital. Sample: 60 adult male and female patients scheduled to undergo thyroidectomy and are willing to take part in this study. Tools of data collection: Tool (I): Patient assessment sheet, Tool II: Neck pain and disability index questionnaire. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between both groups regarding their socio-demographic variables and medical data while there was a highly statistical significant difference between both groups regarding pain in the neck and disability 7 days post thyroidectomy. Conclusions: Teaching and applying neck stretching exercises significantly improved the neck condition of patients in the study group regarding pain and disability of the neck. Nurses working in the general surgery department must include the stretching neck exercises in care and follow-up protocols of patients undergoing total thyroidectomy and to use the validated neck pain and disability questionnaire in monitoring patient's condition.
Background Cognitive impairment is an aging-related disease that can result in a variety of health problems as disability and death. Cognitive impairment was reported to be more than 40% among elderly individuals. Aim To predict cognitive impairment among geriatric patients at Asir central hospital, Saudi Arabia and its relationship to health status. Study design A descriptive correlational study design was used to conduct this study. The study included a convenient sample of all geriatric patients (130) attending outpatient clinics of Asir central hospital in Abha city from the first of February to the mid of March 2020. Three tools were utilized to collect data pertinent to this study; Tool (I): structured geriatric patient’s sociodemographic and clinical data interview questionnaire, Tool II: Geriatric Depression Scale Short-Form (GDS-SF) and Tool III: Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) Scale. Results The majority of the studied sample was in the age group between 60 and 69 years, and female, having a chronic disease, (31.6%) were having a mild cognitive impairment and (17%) were having severe cognitive impairment and there was an association between cognitive impairment levels and health status of the studied patients with no statistically significant difference. Conclusion Nearly one third were having a mild cognitive impairment and about one fifth were having severe cognitive impairment. There was a correlation between levels of cognitive impairment and health status of the studied patients. Recommendations Health education programs to increase the awareness of the Saudi community about cognitive impairment and its risk factors are needed. Elderly cognitive screening services must be readily available for early diagnosis and early treatment of cognitive impairment.
Radioactive iodine therapy is the most common treatment for Graves' disease and toxic multi-nodular goiter in adult Aim: to evaluate the effect of nursing instructions on life style of thyroid disorders patients receiving radioactive iodine therapy (RAI). Patients and methods: the study was conducted in Nuclear Medicine department of Assiut university hospital and South Egypt Cancer Institute. A convenience sample (60) adult thyroid disorder patients from both sex, who were admitted in the Nuclear Medicine department for RAI therapy. Tools Patient interview Questionnaire, patient's life style questionnaire: (Walker, K. Sechirst, N. Pender., 1995) and designed nursing instructions booklet Results: the study group patient achieved a satisfactory level of knowledge after application of the nursing instructions (86.7%). There was a highly statistically significant difference between the study group pre & post implementation of the nursing instructions (P.v 0.001). Conclusion: there was an improvement in knowledge level after implementation of the nursing instructions in the study group, 86.7%, there was a highly statistically significant difference between the study group patients pre and post application of nursing instructions. An improvement of life style in the study group after implementation of nursing instructions. Recommendations: Equip the nuclear unit with: nursing instructions booklet covering instructions about improving life style of patients receiving RAI therapy.
Background; findings from the meta-analysis have shown that patients present improvements in glycaemic control, and in the prevention and control of the acute and chronic complications, when they receive effective treatment, self-management support and regular monitoring. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementing a health education program on outcomes of type I diabetic patients. Quasi-experimental study design was used to fulfill the aim of the study. The study was conducted in the outpatient diabetic clinic at Asyut University Hospital; 60 adult male and female patients who attended the outpatient diabetic clinic were included. Two tools were used in this study; structured interviewing questionnaire with three parts; part one: demographic patient variables, part two: patient's medical data and part three: patient's knowledge regarding diabetes, the second tool is evaluation of type I diabetic patients' outcomes (pre/post). Results revealed that the highest percentage of the studied samples were in the age group 18 to less than 30 years, 90.0% of the study group and 83.4% of the control group were having a family history of diabetes, a statistically significant difference was found in the study group patients pre and post application of the program regarding insulin injection and glycemic control. Conclusion: this study demonstrated the effectiveness of health education program implementation on the outcomes of type I diabetic patients in terms of improved knowledge and practicing exercise, teeth care, feet care and on glycemic control.
