Structure and Corrosion Behavior of TiO2 Thin Films Deposited by ALD on a Biomedical Magnesium Alloy

Abstract: Magnesium alloys have been investigated as temporary biomaterials for orthopedic applications. Despite their high osseointegration and mechanical (bone-like) properties, Mg alloys quickly degrade in simulated physiological media. Surface coatings can be deposited onto Mg alloys to slow the corrosion rate of these biomaterials in chloride-rich environments. TiO2 films show high potential for improving the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. This article presents the structural observations and corrosion b… Show more

“…The functionalization of NTOS with biomolecules is a key step for the selective recognition of an analyte. Moreover, it also plays a role for the stability, since the organic coating works as a protective barrier: on the one hand, it prevents the corrosive ions from acquiring close to the surface during the electrochemical measurement [69]; on the other hand, it smooths the surface, which also helps to preserve the morphology of the nanostructured surface, since a topography with many cavities is more prone to corrosion [70].…”

“…Therefore, the high biocompatibility of cpTi in this study supported its use in the fabrication of dental implants, metallic denture frameworks, and metallic coping for porcelain fused to metal restorations than Ni-Cr alloys as Ti forms an oxide layer that prevents the dissolution of ions unlike Ni in Ni-Cr alloy [ 26 , 27 ].…”

“…As a result, the future focus may be on enhancing the barrier effect and binding force for a full-life corrosion-resistant service. In this regard, composite coating may be a viable option for increasing the adhesion force of organic biopolymer coating [117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134]. Furthermore, the formation of composite coatings not only improves corrosion resistance but also endows the Mg alloys with potential bioactivity and biocompatibility in long-term tests.…”
