A large-scale array of long-period magnetic data and a deep-probing magnetotelluric profile were recorded in the intracratonic Paraná sedimentary basin in central eastern South America, which presents a thick and extensive sedimentary-magmatic sequence that allows its basement to be investigated only by indirect methods. Integration of the results from both methods showed that the crust beneath the basin presents several quasi-linear highly conductive channeled zones with limited lateral extent, in coincidence with some of the main tectonic structures recognized at the surface, and a moderate but pervasive lithosphere conductivity enhancement beneath its central part. Upward movement of CO 2 -bearing volatiles and magmas precipitating highly conducting mineral phases along discrete subvertical fault zones that served as feeder conduits for Early Cretaceous voluminous continental flood basalts was a likely process responsible for the localized conductivity enhancements. Correlation between some of the linear conductive zones and elongated magnetic anomalies and between the maximum depth occurrence of most of these conductive anomalies and the Curie depth at which crustal rocks lose their magnetism gives strong support to interconnected iron oxides (especially magnetite) and iron sulfides (such as pyrrhotite) as the main conductive sources. The moderate bulk conductivity increase in the crust and upper mantle beneath the central part of the basin is unexpected for a postulated cratonic basement and is tentatively associated with impregnation of the lithosphere by conducting minerals related either to widespread tectonic events in the Ordovician or Late Precambrian or to dispersed magmatic residues of an Early Cretaceous magma differentiation contaminating the entire lithosphere.

Mid-and large-scale geodiversity calculation in Fuentes Carrionas (NW Spain) and Serra do Cadeado (Paraná, Brazil): methodology and application for land management.ABSTRACT. A state-of-the-art geodiversity concept, its use and scientific development are presented. Methodologies for geodiversity calculation are assessed, as well as their aim and problems. Geodiversity calculation methodology based on biodiversity richness index is explained and applied to two different areas: Fuentes Carrionas, a high mountain midlatitude environment in northern Spain, and Serra do Cadeado, a tropical mid-mountain environment in southern Brasil. A geodiversity map of Fuentes Carrionas proves that glacial cirques over 2000 m a.s.l. keep a high geodiversity related to a periglacial and glacial environment, whereas a geodiversity map of Serra do Cadeado shows that high geodiversity areas are situated at its main structural scarp. Geodiversity calculation needs to take scale and hierarchy issues into account, which makes comparison only possible if the same scale is used. Geodiversity calculation is a useful tool for land management as it defines areas subject to protection due to the richness of abiotic elements. It is also useful in terms of environmental impact assessment and geotourism evaluation at remote areas.

A análise estrutural de falhas e fraturas realizada em pedreiras de rochas vulcânicas da Formação Serra Geral, Bacia do Paraná, região serrana do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, permitiu definir quatro famílias principais de falhas: NE-SW a NNE-SSW, WNW-ESE a E-W, N-S e NW-SE (menos expressivas na escala de afloramento). Os lineamentos (392) extraídos de imagens LANDSAT TM7 e do modelo digital de elevação-SRTM, na escala 1:250.000 apresentam uma frequência de estruturas com orientação dominante WNW-ESE (N60-80W), com valores menos expressivos orientados NE-SW (N30- 40E) e NNE-SSW, N0-10E). As falhas NE-SW e E-W acham-se preenchidas por microfibras de carbonatos e óxidos (de ferro e manganês) e mostram o predomínio de cinemática transcorrente destral. Já as falhas N-S e WNW-ESE não são preenchidas por microfibras, e a cinemática das transcorrências é dominantemente sinistral. A relação cronológica entre as famílias de falhas sugere três grupos de falhas transcorrentes: um mais antigo (Eocretáceo), com direção NW e cinemática destral, um intermediário (Neocretáceo ao Paleógeno), com direções N-S a NNE-SSW (destral) e ENE-SSW a E-W (sinistral), e outro mais novo (Paleógeno ao Neógeno), com direções NE-SW (destral) e NW-SE (sinistral).
