Structural design inspired by beetle elytra and its mechanical properties

Abstract: On the basis of the microstructure of the cross-section of a beetle's elytra, three bio-inspired lightweight structures were designed and built from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic with a three-dimensional printer. The mechanical properties of three lightweight structures were analyzed and compared employing the finite element method, and quasi-static compression experiments and a three-point bending test on the structure samples were carried out using an electronic universal testing machine to verify … Show more

“…The structures were studied using FEM with quasi-static compression and three-point bending. Song et al reported that, under both compression and threepoint bending conditions, structure II had the best specific strength and specific stiffness [82,83]. To improve its performance under compression, the size of model II was optimized using FEM, leading to the optimally sized structure shown in Fig.…”

“…Chen et al [9] discovered the special mechanical structures of dragonfly wing. Research by Guo et al [10] proposed a new lightweight structural design inspired from the microstructures inside the beetle elytra. Similarly, mechanisms with dynamic or static contact can be inspired by the beetles' surficial structures.…”
