Strongyloides ratti antigenic components recognized by IgE antibodies in immunoblotting as an additional tool for improving the immunodiagnosis in human strongyloidiasis

Abstract: IgE antibody response in human strongyloidiasis was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblotting (IB) using (70, 63, 61, 44, 7 kDa). It can be concluded that these five antigenic components recognized by IB-IgE using S. ratti antigen might be employed as an additional tool for improving the immunodiagnosis in human strongyloidiasis.

“…Thus, studies have been conducted using heterologous antigen of filariform larvae from rodents as Strongyloides ratti in the development of serological methods (Grove and Blair 1981;Costa-Cruz et al 1997;Rodrigues et al 2004).…”

“…Previous studies have shown that high levels of IgG, IgE, and IgA antibodies play an important role in the immune response to helminths (Genta and Lillibridge 1989;Rodrigues et al 2004). High levels of specific IgE are usually demonstrated in immunocompetent patients with strongyloidiasis, whereas lower levels are found in the disseminated disease and immunosuppression conditions (Atkins et al 1997;Vercelli et al 1998).…”

“…Antigenic preparations resulting from a saline extract from S. stercoralis larvae or from heterologous parasites, such as S. ratti and S. venezuelensis have been used for antibodies detection in an ELISA format for strongyloidiasis diagnosis (CostaCruz et al 2003;Rodrigues et al 2004;Sato et al 1995a;Silva et al 2003). Despite the great advances in using heterologous antigen for the diagnosis of S. stercoralis in ELISA and immunoblot, more research is necessary to compare the immunodominant antigenic components of those species with S. stercoralis.…”

“…The majority of cases involve chronic lowlevel infection with a minimal and irregular larval output [6,8,9]. Immunologic detection of specific antibodies against Strongyloides is useful for diagnosis because it complements parasitological analysis [10][11][12][13]. Serum is generally used for the detection of specific antibodies.…”
