Detergent fraction of heterologous antigen to detect IgA and IgG in strongyloidiasis using saliva and serum paired samples

Abstract: Strongyloides stercoralis causes chronic asymptomatic infections in immunocompetent human hosts and systemic invasion in immunocompromised patients, developing into a fatal hyperinfection syndrome. IgA and IgG detection in saliva and serum paired samples were tested using total saline extract from Strongyloides venezuelensis (SE(*)) and its detergent phase (D) extracted with Triton X-114. Saliva and serum paired samples were obtained from: 25 patients with confirmed strongyloidiasis; 25 patients with other par… Show more

“…Several studies demonstrated that anti-L3 antibodies, using homologous or heterologous antigens, can be detected in more than 80% of coprologically positive patients [6][7][8][9][10]. Those data showed that enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) protocols are helpful, with high sensitivity and specificity values, although distinction between infections with S. stercoralis from serologically positive cases with negative coproparasitological tests cannot be successfully established [3].…”

“…The detection of IgA anti- S. stercoralis can also aid in the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis [107], especially in patients without excretion of rhabditoid larvae in feces. Due to the immunomodulation of IgA during infections, the results of stool tests are usually negative [63].…”
