Stromal myofibroblasts in nonmetastatic and metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma: An immunohistochemical study

Abstract: Background and Aims:Myofibroblasts are one of the important components of the tumor microenvironment which could possibly play an important role in tumor progression. The purpose of this study was to compare the presence of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and CD34 positive fibroblasts in nonmetastatic and metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma and to evaluate their role in tumor metastasis.Materials and Methods:Ten cases each of histologically proven metastatic and nonmetastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma for… Show more

“…Other authors immunohistochemically analyzed the presence of myofibroblasts in the extracellular matrix of normal oral mucosa and failed to detect any myofibroblasts in the 10 samples studied [32]. In this study, a similar staining pattern was observed for SMA and NG2-positive cells (p > 0.05) in 8 tissue sections from normal oral mucosa (control); this represents the physiological vascular distribution, which helps to identify the pericytes.…”

“…Studies have shown deletion of the chromosome 15, which is the location of the gene TSP-1. In the experimental studies there are proofs that if a copy of the chromosome 15 is added or TSP-1 is given, tumor growth will be suppressed [25,26].…”

“…The number of nodes evaluated to determine the lymphnode status in these earlier studies is unclear. [ 29 ] We have evaluated an average of 13.4 nodes in each case before concluding on their nodal status. There are very few studies in literature which have analyzed fibrocytes and myofibroblasts correlation in OSCC lesions.…”
