Stress in Carbon Film Electrodes during Li +  Electrochemical Intercalation

Abstract: The mechanical deformation of thin films and membrane carbon electrodes during galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles has been measured by a simple optical technique. We have considered the deformations of coke and of graphite membrane electrodes to be due to the variations in the volume of grains and to the surface forces resulting from the electrochemical double layer. For such composite electrodes the minimum stress can be associated with the potential of zero charge of the electrode. The results show that t… Show more

“…Porosity is one of the most important factors to change electrode volume. By comparison of SEM pictures in the literature [26], the porosity of the HOPG electrode was smaller than that of the coke electrode. Then, there were increasing irreversible stresses on both of the membrane electrodes had with time.…”

“…They also withstand the pressure applied inside the cells during the preparation of the electrodes and resist the mechanical stress associated with the Li intercalation that takes place during volume changes and double-layer formation throughout electrical polarization. 3 However, in the case of graphite, the control of structural properties in large-scale processing plants is not easy, specially when this 'plant' is natural. The genesis of graphite mine can undergo alterations during its extraction.…”
