Strategies of plant establishment of two Cerrado species: Byrsonima basiloba Juss. (Malpighiaceae) and Eugenia dysenterica Mart. ex DC (Myrtaceae)

Abstract: This study investigates the initial development of two Cerrado species, Eugenia dysenterica and Byrsonima basiloba. Both species have high ethnobotanical importance and are widely used as a food source as well as in folk medicine. Eugenia dysenterica presented hypogeous cryptocotylar germination and the cotyledons were rich in reserve material. This plant species showed quick root development and after the shoot had produced the first two pairs of eophyls, the seedling went into a latent state for at least 1 y… Show more

“…Tsukamoto-Filho et al (2013) and Lopes et al (2014) also refer to the management practices needed for plantations maintenance and related costs. In addition, a high quality seedling means hight timber production capacity, which is described in Silveira et al (2013) and Faria et al (2013) as the main goal of any forest company in the world. CONCLUSION The clone AEC 1528 showed better quality standards at the Nursery #1, and clones AEC 100 and AEC 244 showed greater height and collar diameter at the Nursery #2, which means high quality seedlings and further vigour and development.…”

“…A primeira contagem de emergência foi conduzida juntamente com a EP, considerandose a porcentagem de plântulas emergidas aos 35 dias após a semeadura (SILVEIRA et al, 2013). O índice de velocidade (IVE) e tempo médio de emergência (TME) de plântulas foram determinados contabilizando o número de plântulas normais até 60 dias após a instalação da EP, aplicando-se os critérios e equações estabelecidos por Maguire (1962) e Edmond e Drapala (1958), respectivamente.…”

“…If we also calculate the NL per centimeter of stem, we have 0.7 leaves/cm for plants grown in Bioplant ® , while for the SB+CMC and SCB+FC substrates, which had higher SL/RCD values, we find 1 leaf/cm, thus confirming that these latter substrates were not responsible for etiolation in the seedlings. A similar characteristic occurs in the R/S, given that Bioplant ® provided 3.8 times greater accumulation of dry weight in the root system than in the shoot, considering that the species prioritizes the development of the root system to the detriment of the shoot when young (Silveira et al, 2013).…”

“…If we consider that E. dysenterica has two opposite leaves per node (Silveira et al, 2013), the plants show one node in the Bioplant ® substrate and three nodes in SB+CMC and SCB+FC. In addition, the seedlings grown in the Bioplant ® have a height close to 60% of the height of those grown, for example, in SB+CMC, which produced the greatest height in absolute terms.…”
