Purpose This paper aims to investigate the local perspectives, based on culture and beliefs about peer stigma, consequences and strategies to reduce mental health stigma among adolescents in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach This study included 30 participants, including students, teachers, health professionals and lecturers. Two sessions of focus group discussions and 14 sessions of in-depth interviews were performed to collect the data. A qualitative content analysis was carried out, and some related themes and sub-themes were explored. Findings This study found that peer stigma was prevalent and negatively impacted the psychological, social and intellectual development of adolescents with mental disorders (MD) in Indonesian society. Five strategies to tackle peer stigma were proposed, including increasing mental health literacy (MHL), reducing the harmful effects of stigma, fostering a supportive social environment, expanding access to and improving the quality of mental health care and advocating for public health policies. Research limitations/implications More qualitative research on the experiences and perspectives of victims, perpetrators and society concerning mental health stigma in adolescents is required to fully understand why stigma arises, what causative factors and repercussions it has, as well as how to deal with it. Practical implications Peer stigma still exists among adolescents. It has negative impacts on their mental and psychological well-being. MHL, social environment, the harmful effects of stigma, as well as mental health access and policy were concerns of this study. A school is a place where adolescents spend most of their social time. Schools play a vital part in the stigma-reduction program. Originality/value Mental health stigma among adolescents with MD is an issue that has potentially hindered mental health recovery. Anti-stigma intervention based on local perspectives is valuable in increasing the effectiveness and acceptance of interventions.

Introduction: Mental health is still a significant problem in the world, because health is not only seen as free from disease but also includes all aspects of human life, physical, emotional, social and spiritual. The purpose of this study is to describe the attitudes and behavior of individuals in patients with mental disorders in the community. Method: This study used a quantitative descriptive design. The population in this study were people in three RWs in one urban village of Surakarta with a total of 4,465 people. The sample used in this study was 99 respondents using a simple random sampling. The analysis used is univariate analysis with a central tendency. The instrument used individual characteristics, attitudes and behavior towards mental patients Results: Based on the results of research on 99 respondents, it was found that the characteristics of the majority of respondents were female (64,6%), age 36-45 years (38,4%), being high school education level (53,5%) and the majority working as laborers (23,2%). The attitude of respondents to patients with mental disorders is negative or less supportive (52,52%), while the behavior of respondents to patients with mental disorders is considered less good (79,8%). Conclusions: The community still had negative attitude and poor behavior toward people living with mental illness. This result indicated the need for intervention and promotion about mental illness in the community setting.

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh salah satu penyandang masalah kesejahteraan sosial pada ODGJ yang hidup terlantar di jalanan. Dengan adanya fenomena tersebut perlu adanya peran dari Dinas Sosial yang terkait untuk penanganan serta memberikan hak yang sama kepada para penderita ODGJ terlantar. Hak yang dimaksud ialah mendapatkan hak pelayanan kesehatan jiwa yang mudah dijangkau dan sesuai standar pelayanan serta mendapat jaminan atas ketersediaan obat sesuai dengan kebutuhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui lebih dalam terkait peran pemerintah dalam hal ini Dinas Sosial Kabupaten Karimun yang menaungi masalah sosial dalam penanganan ODGJ terlantar serta faktor hambatan apa saja yang terdapat dalam proses penanganan tersebut. Metode yang peneliti gunakan ialah metode kualitatif. Dengan teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan ialah wawancara, studi literature, dan obesrvasi atau pengamatan lapangan. Sumber data diperoleh menggunakan data sekunder dan primer. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti melihat peran Dinas Sosial berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Rasyid (Labolo, 2013) bahwa peran pemerintah terdiri dari pengaturan, pelayanan, pembangunan, dan pemberdayaan. Dari hasil penelitian diperoleh bahwa peran Dinas Sosial Kabupaten Karimun dalam penanganan ODGJ terlantar belum dilakukan secara optimal. Belum adanya regulasi Perda Kabupaten Karimun yang khusus menangani hal tersebut. Kemudian terdapat faktor penghambat, yakni kurangnya anggaran dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan sarana dan prasaranan yang menunjang penanganan pemberdayaan dan pengobatan penderita gangguan jiwa.
