Aim:To compare the incidence of apical root crack formation after root canal preparation at different instrumentation lengths using ProTaper Universal (PTU), ProTaper Next (PTN) and ProTaper Gold (PTG) file systems.Subjects and Methods:Eighty-four mandibular first premolars with single and straight root canal were mounted in resin block after simulating periodontal ligaments. 1–2 mm of root apex was exposed followed by sectioning of 1 mm of root tip for better stereomicroscopic visualization. While the Control group was left unprepared, experimental groups were instrumented up to root canal length (RCL) and (RCL-1 mm) respectively using PTU, PTN and PTG. After staining the root apex with 1% methylene blue dye, stereomicroscopic images were obtained for evaluating apical root cracks. The data were analyzed using Chi-square, phi and Cramer test. The significance level was set at P < 0.05.Results:Significantly less dentinal defects were seen between PTG and PTU while there was no significant difference between PTU-PTN and PTN-PTG. Furthermore, samples instrumented up to RCL-1 mm showed lesser cracks as compared with samples instrumented up to RCL.Conclusion:PTG produced least number of cracks followed by PTN and PTU. Furthermore, instrumenting short of RCL reduced the crack formation risk.

Aim:The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the vertical force required to fracture mandibular incisor teeth, obturated using gutta-percha with three different sealers.Materials and Methods:Seventy-five extracted mandibular incisors with intact and fully formed apices, exhibiting single root and canal were acquired. The teeth were decoronated obtaining a root segments of 15 mm and were divided into five groups (n = 15). Group 1: left uninstrumented and unfilled (negative control). For groups 2–5, samples were instrumented using Protaper NEXT (X1 and X2). Group 2: left unobturated (positive control). Groups 3–5 were obturated using lateral compaction by gutta-percha and three sealers (AH Plus®, Apexit®, and EndoSequence® BioCeramic™). All the samples were prepared for fracture testing and vertical load was applied till fracture. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test, for the data recorded of the force required in Newton (N).Results:The load required to fracture exhibited a significant difference. The intergroup analysis revealed, samples obturated using bioceramic sealer exhibited higher fracture resistance (P < 0.01).Conclusion:The use of gutta-percha and a root canal sealer reinforces the root dentin, leading to increased fracture resistance against vertical forces. Bioceramic sealer group in them exhibited better results.

Objective: In this study, we compared the occurrence of dentinal micro-cracks after use of the ProTaper Universal (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), ProTaper Next (Dentsply Maillefer), and Reciproc (VDW, Munich, Germany) nickel–titanium rotary file systems in root canal preparation. Method: One hundred mandibular anterior teeth were divided into five groups of 20 specimens each. Group 1 served as a control, with no intervention. In group 2, preparation was performed using the step-back technique and K files. In groups 3–5, root canal preparation was performed using the ProTaper Universal, ProTaper Next, and Reciproc file systems, respectively. Following preparation, specimens were sectioned at 3, 6, and 9 mm using a Minitom precision cut-off machine. The sections were evaluated under a stereomicroscope. The following scoring system was used to rate specimens: 1, no micro-crack; 2, incomplete micro-crack; and 3, vertical root fracture. The results were statistically assessed (p ≤ 0.05). Results: No micro-crack formation was observed in groups 1 and 2. The highest rate of micro-crack formation was observed in specimens prepared with the ProTaper Universal file system (20%), followed by those prepared with the Reciproc (11.7%) and ProTaper Next (6.7%) file systems. However, no significant difference was detected among groups (p > 0.05). In the groups ProTaper Universal and Reciproc files were used, 1 vertical root fracture was found in 9 mm sections for each. Conclusion: Considering the limitations of in vitro studies, we can conclude that all rotary file systems used in this study led to dentinal micro-crack formation in roots. The ProTaper Universal file system caused more dentinal micro-cracking than did the ProTaper Next and Reciproc file systems.
