Stereomicroscopic evaluation of dentinal defects induced by new rotary system: "ProTaper NEXT"

Abstract: Introduction:The objective of this study was to evaluate dentinal defects formed by new rotary system — Protaper next™ (PTN).Materials and Methods:Sixty single-rooted premolars were selected. All specimens were decoronated and divided into four groups, each group having 15 specimens. Group I specimens were prepared by Hand K-files (Mani), Group II with ProTaper Universal (PT; Dentsply Maillefer), Group III with Hero Shaper (HS; Micro-Mega, Besancon, France), and Group IV with PTN (Dentsply Maillefer). Roots of… Show more

“…This can be attributed to the incorporation of M-wire technology in PTN imparting increased flexibility compared to the conventional Ni–Ti wire (PTU). [ 5 6 15 ] In addition, PTN has off centered rectangular design which generates swaggering motion, decreasing the screw effect, the dangerous taper lock, and torque on any given file by minimizing contact between the file and root dentin,[ 6 ] henceforth reducing the crack formation.…”

“…Comparing to the evolved mechanical instruments available for root canal instrumentation, Protaper NEXT rotary files have exhibited less percentages of micro-cracks formation into radicular dentin. [ 18 ] Hence, Protaper NEXT #25, 0.06% taper was used for instrumentation of samples in the current study.…”

“…This characteristic may increase micro-crack formation by exerting more stress on the dentin (20). In a study investigating dentinal microcrack formation occurring with the use of the ProTaper Universal, ProTaper Next, and Heroshaper rotary file systems, Shori et al (21) found the highest micro-crack formation rate in the ProTaper Universal group. Similarly, Liu et al (22) observed more micro-crack formation with the use of the ProTaper Universal and OneShape systems than with the use of the Reciproc and self-adjusting file systems.…”
