Stepping volume and intensity patterns in a multi-ethnic urban Asian population

Abstract: BackgroundAccelerometer measured physical activity (PA) studies particularly in non-western populations are lacking. Therefore, this study investigated stepping activity in a multi-ethnic urban Asian population.MethodsAdult participants from the Singapore Health Study 2 consented to accelerometer activity monitoring for 7-consecutive days. Mean daily step count, peak stepping intensity (i.e. cadence) over 1-min, 30-min and 60-min and time spent in each cadence band: 0 (non-movement), 1–19, 20–39, 40–59, 60–79,… Show more

“…Recruitment to the study has been described elsewhere [23]. In brief, participants from the Singapore Health Study 2 (SHS2) (n = 2686) (a cross-sectional survey of population health) were invited to take part in the accelerometer measured PA study.…”

“…To overcome this, research on objectively measured PA is now starting to include cadence i.e. the number of steps taken per minute-a measure of physical intensity [23]. A cadence of ≥100steps/minute has been shown to be equivalent to absolute metabolic equivalent (METS) of ≥ 3 i.e., moderate-to vigorous-PA [24,25].…”

“…Of the 14 studies, six were conducted in United Kingdom (UK) [37][38][39][40][41][42], two in the United States (USA) [37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44], and one each in Canada [45], Norway [45,46], Netherlands [36], Singapore [47], India [48] and Bangladesh [49] (Table 1). Thirteen out of 14 studies used an Acti-Graph (Pensacola, Florida, USA) with two using a Sensewear Armband (BodyMedia, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA) [41] and a pedometer [42] along with the ActiGraph.…”
