Statistical interpolation of ozone measurements from satellite data (TOMS, SBUV and SAGE II) using the kriging method

Abstract: Abstract. This study demonstrates that ordinary kriging in spherical coordinates using experimental semi-variograms provides highly usable results, especially near the pole in winter and/or where there could be data missing over large areas. In addition, kriging allows display of the spatial variability of daily ozone measurements at dierent pressure levels. Three satellite data sets were used: Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data, Solar Backscattered UltraViolet (SBUV), and the Stratospheric Aerosol a… Show more

“…Spatial interpolation, such as inverse-distance weighting (Breton et al 2012) and Kriging (Tranchant and Vincent 2000), was used to estimate ozone exposures for epidemiology studies. Often, a radius threshold is chosen in interpolation (Bell 2006).…”

“…Most of these studies focus on a set of factors, such as sediment morphology, storm surges, wave actions, wind-forcing, channelling and port construction as the major contribution factors to coastal erosion. Some studies do not focus on the factors that cause coastal erosion, but evaluate the instrumentation accuracy (Sánchez-Carnero et al, 2012;Dierssen and Theberge, 2014) and bathymetry data interpolation techniques (Tranchant and Vincent, 2000;Giordano et al, 2015) to state the most accurate means and methods to use when conducting bathymetry analysis. Studies regarding Saldanha Bay bathymetry that investigated the impact of dredging and the construction of the causeway and jetty at the Port of Saldanha Bay, found that these anthropogenic factors do affect the morphology and distribution of the sediments that impacts the environment, causing erosion of the Langebaan beaches (Luger et al, 1999;Wiese, 2013).…”

“…Kriging is a popular linear least-squares interpolation method widely used in mining, mapping, hydrogeology, and environmental science, (e.g., Bayraktar and Sezer Turalioglu, 2005), as well as remote sensing (Stein et al, 2002;Tranchant and Vincent, 2000). Kriging considers the observations as a realization of a random spatial process.…”
