Stage II/III cancer of the rectosigmoid junction: An independent tumor type?

Abstract: Abstract. The 5-year relapse-free survival rate (5Y-RFS) and 5-year overall survival rate (5Y-OS) were investigated in 766 patients with stage II/III colorectal cancer (CRC). The Stage II group included 283 patients with colon cancer (CC), 40 patients with rectosigmoid junction cancer (RSC), and 74 patients with rectal cancer (RC), while the Stage III group comprised 226 patients with CC, 52 patients with RSC, and 91 patients with RC. Stage III patients with RC were further divided into 68 patients with Ra canc… Show more

“…Measures were calculated for colon and rectal cancers separately. Rectosigmoid junction cancers were grouped with colon cancers as they have more similar rates of survival and recurrence 12 . Outcome measures were calculated for the whole cohort; however, care process measures required data from the ClinCR, which are collected only in public hospitals (43 hospitals; 61.5% of patients).…”

“…Rectal cancer (RC) is the eighth most common cancer and the ninth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide (1). The rectosigmoid junction is located in the sigmoid colon, but its surgical approach refers to the rectum, so it is now considered a separate site (2). Locally advanced RC usually refers to clinical stage II/III middle and low RC.…”

“…Patients with rectosigmoid colon cancers (between the sacral promontory and the lower margin of S2) were included because these cancers behave more like sigmoid than rectal cancers. 33 No patients underwent HIPEC. The median follow-up time was 22 months (range, 1-44).…”
