ResumoO processo respiratório e diversas reações oxidativas das células aeróbicas levam à formação de radicais livres, que contribuem para o aparecimento de diversas doenças. As células humanas dependem de sua capacidade antioxidante para fornecer proteção contra os efeitos prejudiciais de radicais livres e espécies reativas do oxigênio, que são conseqüências inevitáveis da vida aeróbica. Vários estudos epidemiológicos indicam que a alta ingestão de produtos vegetais está associada com uma redução no risco de uma variedade de doenças crônicas como aterosclerose e câncer, efeitos que têm sido particularmente atribuídos aos compostos que possuem atividade antioxidante nos vegetais: vitaminas C e E, os compostos fenólicos, especialmente os flavonóides, e os carotenóides. Compostos fenólicos agem como antioxidantes, não somente por sua habilidade em doar hidrogênio ou elétrons, mas também em virtude de seus radicais intermediários estáveis, que impedem a oxidação de vários ingredientes do alimento, particularmente de lipídios. Carotenóides são constituídos de cadeias de polienos, em um longo sistema de duplas ligações conjugadas, rico em elétrons, responsável pela atividade antioxidante desses compostos: tanto na absorção do oxigênio singlet quanto de radicais livres, para interromper as reações em cadeia onde eles estão envolvidos. Este trabalho teve por finalidade revisar as diferentes formas de avaliação qualitativa e quantitativa dos principais componentes não-nutrientes antioxidantes em alimentos de origem vegetal: compostos fenólicos e carotenóides. Palavras-chave: Avaliação qualitativa, avaliação quantitativa, componentes não-nutrientes AbstractThe respiratory process and several aerobic cells oxidative reactions lead to the formation of free radicals which contribute to the appearance of different diseases. The human cells depend on their antioxidant ability to provide protection against the prejudicial effects of free radical and reactive oxygen species that are inevitable consequences of aerobic life. Several epidemiologic studies indicate that high plant products ingestion is associated to a reduction in the hazard of a variety of cronical diseases such as arteriosclerosis and cancer. These effects have been specifically attributed to the plant compounds that have antioxidant activity: vitamin C and E, phenolic compounds, specially flavonoids, and carotenoids.

Nutrient, water, and their interactions influence the allocation of investment by plants to resistance and tolerance traits. We used a completely crossed randomizedblock design experiment to examine the independent and interactive effects of nutrients and water availability on tannin production of C. equisetifolia seedlings. The results showed that nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer have significant effects on total phenolics (TP) and extractable condensed tannins (ECT) concentrations of branchlets. TP and ECT concentrations decreased with fertilizer addition and increased in arid condition. This pattern lends to support source-sink hypothesis such as the carbon-nutrient balance (CNB) hypothesis and the growth-differentiation balance (GDB) hypothesis. Soluble sugars or starch concentrations were both inversely related to TP concentrations. However, there was no significant correlation between them and ECT concentrations. In addition, chlorophyll concentration had a positive linear correlation with TP and no significant correlation with ECT. On the contrary, chlorophyll a/b ratios were negatively correlated with TP and positively correlated with ECT. The discrepancy of relationship between carbohydrates and TP or ECT showed that the biosynthetic routes of different tannins were different. In this study, no significant correlation between TP and N, or ECT and N, did not support protein competition model (PCM). TP:N and ECT:N ratios were higher in nutrient deficiency and arid conditions, which were one of the important nutrient conservation strategies for C. equisetifolia.

How do soil nutrients affect within-plant patterns of herbivory in seedlings of Eucalyptus nitens?

This study assessed how the palatability of leaves of different age classes (young, intermediate and older) of Eucalyptus nitens seedlings varied with plant nutrient status, based on captive feeding trials with two mammalian herbivores, Red-bellied Pademelons (Thylogale billardierii), and Common Brushtail Possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). Seedlings were grown under three nutrient treatments (low, medium and high) and we determined how palatability was related to chemical and physical characteristics of the leaves. Pademelons ate more older leaves than young and intermediate leaves for all treatments. This pattern was best explained by sideroxylonals (formylated pholoroglucinol compounds known to deter herbivory by other marsupials), and/or essential oil compounds that were in lower concentrations in older leaves. In the low nutrient treatment, possums also ate more of the older leaves. However, in the medium and high nutrient treatments, possums ate more intermediate leaves than older leaves and showed a behavioural preference for young leaves (consuming younger leaves first) over intermediate and older leaves, in spite of high levels of sideroxylonals and essential oils. The young leaves did, however, have the highest nitrogen concentration of the leaf age classes. Thus, either sideroxylonals and essential oils provided little or no deterrent to possums, or the deterrent was outweighed by other factors such as high nitrogen. This study indicates that mammalian herbivores show different levels of relative use and damage to leaf age classes at varying levels of plant nutrient status and, therefore, their impact on plant fitness may vary with environment.
