Stability Analysis of the Cable Core of a 10 kA HTS DC Power Cable Used in the Electrolytic Aluminum Industry

Abstract: High temperature superconducting (HTS) dc power cable shows a wide application prospect in the field of power transmission for its nearly lossless and rather high capacity. IEE has installed a 360-meter long high temperature superconducting (HTS) dc power cable at the self-supply power plant of Zhongfu Industrial Company Ltd. in Gongyi, Henan and the system has operated for two years. The cable connects a 19.5 MVA/1.5 kA silicon-controlled rectifier, which connects with a 110 kV/1 kV transformer, to the bus ba… Show more

“…The first effort was accomplished in 2011 on a 200 m DC cable with 10 kV voltage and 2 kA current [33]. After that institute of electrical engineering and Chinese academy of sciences have installed a 1.3 kV and 10 kA DC cable in 2012 [34]. Another DC HTS cable was installed in South Korea in 2015 with a 3.13 kA current and 80 kV voltage ratings [35].…”

“…The replacement of conventional aluminum busbars by a HTS solution in aluminum electrolysis was already proposed in 1995 [21]. The technical realization of HTS busbars of such high amperages is challenging and only few prototype HTS high current DC busbar systems were realized and operated so far including applications such as aluminum electrolysis [22], railway grids [23], chlorine electrolysis [24], and HV-DC transmission [15]. The amperage of realized HTS DC busbar systems remained at or below 20 kA.…”

“…Most recently, the SuperLink project was commissioned in Munich, aiming to develop the longest 110 kV superconducting power cable ever built, with 15 km length [8]. DC superconducting cables have also gathered increased attention lately [9][10][11][12]. As example one can mention the superconducting cables for sustainable energy transition (SCARLET) project, which is bringing together 15 partners from seven countries to connect landbased remote renewable energy generation sites to the grid [13].…”
