Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity — chronic oral ulcerative disease as a possible etiologic factor

Abstract: This report documents the association of carcinoma of the oral cavity with chronic oral ulcerative disease in two patients. This association has not previously been documented in the surgical literature. Both patients in this report had chronic oral ulcerative disease preceding their cancers; however, the common etiologic factors for oral cancer were not detected in either case. Oral lichen planus and pemphigus vulgaris should be considered as potentially premalignant lesions and should be treated accordingly.

“…It has been reported that atrophie, erosive and ulcerative lesions of oral lichen planus and those showing erythroplakic components are potentially more dangerous (2,5,8,9,(18)(19)(20)(21). Although in the present study the lesions were not recorded by subtypes, a retrospective assessment from the photographs showed that all 3 oral cancers were preceded by an atrophie form of lichen planus (Figs.…”

“…Une étude déjà ancienne, à partir de deux cas cliniques, évoque la possibilité d'une relation entre une ulcération chronique et un carcinome épidermoïde buccal [12]. Pour une prothèse amovible, l'intrados des crochets doit épouser fidèle-ment la surface des dents supports [13], sans venir au contact des tissus mous.…”
