Squamate reptiles of the Atlantic Forest of northern Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: researchers. More than 95% of the taxa in the present list were listed in scientific collections and were included in the checklist, however a few species records were based on reliable photographs (two of which are Figure 2G and 3C). Taxonomic nomenclature follows Bérnils and Costa (2012) and the voucher specimen numbers can be found in Appendix 1. The collected specimens were fixed in 10% formalin and subsequently deposited in one of the following scientific collections.

“…Ab’Saber 1977 , Xavier et al 2015 ). Northeastern Brazil exhibits a mosaic of ecoregions and range limits with taxa and their co-adapted gene complexes associated to Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga relicts (e.g., Freitas 2014 ). Similar to a scenario suggested for the pitvipers Bothrops lutzi and Bothrops erythromelas above, a period with dry climate within the late Pleistocene 0.63 – 0.11 mya, in particular during the Last Glacial Maximum 12000–18000 years ago (e.g.…”

“… Erythrolamprus aesculapii monozoa does not apply to our specimen according to inter-ring distances. Freitas (2014) recorded Erythrolamprus aesculapii aesculapii also from Lauro de Freitas, but it is unlikely since it is allocated to the Amazon population of the species. Erythrolamprus aesculapii aesculapii differs from Erythrolamprus aesculapii venustissimus by a light head color with dark body bands and red rings of same size as black rings, whereas Erythrolamprus aesculapii venustissimus presents a blackish head with light body bands and red rings twice the size of black rings ( Peters and Orejas-Miranda 1970 ).…”

“…In Brazil, the species occurs naturally in the Amazon region, where it is found primarily in riparian forests (Zimmerman & Rodrigues 1990), in the gallery forests of the Cerrado savannas, and in various environments of the Caatinga dry forest biome (Ávila-Pires 1995). The natural occurrence of the species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is limited to the northern Brazil, in the Municipality of Amargosa, in the Center-South of Bahia state (Freitas 2014). In this study, we present an established population of the species in southeastern Brazil, the southeasternmost record along its entire range.…”
