Abstract: Information about the snake diversity and their natural history from the Atlantic forest domain in Brazil refer mostly to inland forests than to coastal region. Within the state of Bahia, this knowledge is concentrated to the southeastern coastal stretch. Herein we report on the diversity of snakes from the restinga, ombrophilous forest and anthropogenic environment from the northern Atlantic coast of Bahia. We sampled nine sites for three years and visited four museum collections. Furthermore, we provide anec… Show more

“…We found some similarities of composition in this habitat with both Boaconstrictor and Tantillamelanocephala that also commonly are found in southeastern Restingas (Dias and Rocha 2014, Martins et al 2012), and aquatic snakes found both in fresh and salty water. The Cascabel Rattlesnake Crotalusdurissus is also found in other Restingas (Marques et al, 2016). This species is associated with open areas, commonly found in Cerrado and Caatinga (França et al 2008; Vanzolini et al 1980) and it supposedly reaches Brazilian coast regions dispersing through deforested areas of Atlantic Forest (Bastos et al 2005).…”

“…Although the reptiles of costal Restingas have been commonly studied in the Southeast and Central Atlantic Forest (Rocha 2000, Santos et al 2012, Marques et al 2016), little information is available for northern portions of the biome, and here we present the first records of snakes from coastal Restingas of Paraíba State. “…Ophiophagy, when a species feeds on snakes, is not a rare feeding habit in snakes; such is the case of the mussuranas (Clelia spp.) and the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah Cantor, 1836) (Marques et al 2016).…”
