A study on the dynamic behaviors of water droplets impacting nanostructured surfaces AIP Advances 1, 042139 (2011) Impact behavior of droplets on a surface is an intriguing research topic, and its control should be very useful in diverse industrial applications. We investigated the impact behavior of water droplets on the textured and chemically treated surface of silicon and obtained the impact mode map on the parameter plane subtended by the Weber number (up to 85) and temperature (up to 320 C). The patterns comprise of micropillars (14 lm in height) in square lattice with a lattice constant of 10 and 20 lm, and the surface was further made superhydrophobic by coating with graphene nanosheets. Six distinct impact modes are identified. It was found that the impact mode map can be dramatically altered by modifying the texture and chemistry of the surface, and the observations are well explained with regard to heat transfer, vapor/bubble generation and vapor flow beneath the droplet. Instability in the droplet arising from the mismatch between vapor generation rate and exhaust conditions is the dominant factor in determining the impact mode. Our results revealed more facts and features of the droplet impact phenomenon and can be very useful for target-oriented surface design towards precise control of droplet impact behavior on heated substrates. In the present work different micro structures with high potential for convection and nucleate boiling processes were presented. Based on literature appropriate micro structures were selected which should offer the possibility to enhance the heat transfer capability. By help of thermodynamic simulations it could be demonstrated that the convective heat transfer can be improved by use of micro structured surfaces. Especially calottes, micro channels and micro columns were determined. Primarily, the surface enlargement has the determining influence on the heat transfer efficiency. However, the design of the geometries and the arrangement of the structures also effect the heat transfer. Especially for forced convection processes the influence of these parameters has to be examined in further investigations. By use of electrochemical and laser beam machining the selected structures were manufactured in copper work pieces. With Jet-ECM realized micro structures offer a high exactness with excellent surface qualities. The high potential of Jet-ECM for a reproducible fabrication of micro structures for thermodynamic applications is obvious. Laser machined micro structures are distinguished by rough surfaces which can offer an additional positive effect on the heat transfer phenomena. So laser beam machining is also suitable for the reproducible machining of thermodynamically appropriate micro structures

Abstract:The microarray structured surfaces in the nature, such as shark skin and lotus leaf, have good waterproof and anti-friction performances. Besides, the microarray structures above also have good application prospects in heat exchange and biomedicine. Compared to traditional machining with problems of high cost and low efficiency, the mask chemical etching method has the advantages that no residual stress exists when processing, and can be employed for large area preparation with high machining efficiency. We propose to prepare micro cylindrical array structures on copper substrate by mask chemical etching method, and research influences of processing parameters on the size of microarray structures.
