Abstract:In time where the words of Baron de Coubertin " e important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle" to improve the athlete's performance was not as much meaning these days where the important thing is to win. Depending on the sport practiced, milliseconds can make the podium and the health of the athlete now has vital importance. For this there was a great incentive for research to bring improvement in athletic performance, talent detection, care that result in breaking records, medals and trophies.… Show more

Facial injuries are frequently observed in athletes participating in contact and limitedcontact sports branches. Most of face injuries are accompanied by dental injuries. Preventive methods and measures should be taken into consideration in order to reduce the effects of trauma on the face. In this manuscript, eye injuries, facial trauma (facial region soft tissue injuries, facial area fractures) and dental trauma will be examined and methods to prevent traumatic injuries on facial region will be reviewed.
ÖZÖzellikle temaslı ve kısmi temaslı spor branşlarına katılan sporcularda yüz bölgesi yaralanmaları sıkça gözlenmektedir. Yüz bölgesindeki yaralanmaların birçoğuna dental yaralanmalar da eşlik etmektedir. Sporcularda, yüz bölgesinde oluşan travmanın etkilerinin azaltılabilmesi için alınacak korunma önlemleri bulunmaktadır. Bu derlemede, göz yaralanmaları, yüz bölgesi travmaları (yüz bölgesi yumuşak doku yaralanmaları, yüz bölgesi kırıkları) ve dental travmalar incelenip travmadan korunmak için alınabilecek önlemler paylaşılacaktır.

Aim. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the medication «Pomegranate balm» in the treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases in professional athletes. Methods. Among 475 professional athletes the prevalence of periodontal diseases was studied using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs. Silness-Löe plaque index, periodontal index, Muhlemann sulcus bleeding index modified by I. Cowell and biochemical analyses were determined in 51 freestyle and classical style wrestlers divided into three groups: group 1 - 20 athletes with intact periodontium, group 2 - 16 athletes with chronic catarrhal gingivitis, group 3 - 15 wrestlers with the signs of mild periodontitis. Sialometry was performed, the concentration of secretory immunoglobulin A and interleukin-8 in oral fluid was measured by the method of enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA). Results. The maximum values of gingival bleeding were recorded in groups 1 and 2 of the examined athletes - 20.9±3.79 and 34.5±3.21%, respectively. The incidence of moderate and severe periodontal diseases in the age group of 24-32 years was in average 14.1±2.35 and 5.5±1.53%, respectively. Use of the drug sharply increased the rate of basic salivation (from 1.98±0.031 to 2.23±0.023 ml/min, p <0.001), and by the end of the investigation, in most of the athletes the earlier observed signs of hyposalivation resolved, and the analysis of laboratory data revealed markedly increased level of secretory immunoglobulin A from 260.2±1.47 to 544.0±6.33 mg×mg-1 protein and decreased levels of interleukin-8 from 2829.6±15.8 to 1224.2±18.0 pg×mg-1 protein (p <0.001). Conclusion. Effective and biologically active preparation based on propolis «Pomegranate balm» can significantly improve the dental status of professional athletes against the background of improving the state of factors of local oral immunity.
Introduction
Dental care is provided for high-performance athletes at national and international sports events. Elite athletes may seek care for sports-related injuries and pre-existing oral diseases. Previous studies indicate an association between oral health problems and negative performance impacts in elite athletes.
Objectives
To determine the prevalence of the most common oral pathologies in high-performance athletes during the emergency dental care performed at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games (JPL-19).
Methodology
All reports of athletes (≥18 years old, of both sexes, from 41 countries) who received emergency dental care at Pan American Villas during the JPL-19 were included. Injuries and types of oral diseases were classified according to the Injury and Disease Surveillance System proposed by the International Olympic Committee.
Results
Of the 6680 participating athletes, 76 (1.14%) presented as dental emergencies, 90.8% (69/76) of the athletes seen presented pre-existing oral pathological conditions, the most frequent were periodontal diseases (34%, 26/76) and dental caries (29%, 22/76). Among the sports with the most cases, there were 22 (29%) in athletics, 6 (8%) in soccer, and 6 (8%) in taekwondo. The most frequent dental emergencies came from Peru, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Grenada, and Venezuela.
Conclusions
Pre-existing oral diseases were more frequent than sports-related accidents. The most prevalent diseases were periodontal disease and dental caries disease. It is necessary to implement new care strategies for athletes, based on prevention, before and during sports competitions.
