Spontaneous Exact Spin-Wave Fractals in Magnonic Crystals

Abstract: Exact fractals of nonlinear waves that rely on strong dispersion and nonlinearity and arise spontaneously out of magnetic media were observed for the first time. The experiments make use of a microwave to excite a spin wave in a quasi-one-dimensional magnonic crystal. When the power of the input microwave (P_{in}) is low, the output signal has a power-frequency spectrum that consists of a single peak. When P_{in} is increased to a certain level, new side modes are generated through modulational instability, re… Show more

“…In this work, Object-Oriented Micromagnetic Framework (OOMMF) simulations were performed on the filter structure shown in Figure 1a. OOMMF solves Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation using finite-difference methods [20][21][22][23].…”

“…Magnonic crystals are formed by periodically adjusting material parameters, see, e.g., Ciubotaru et al, (2013), Obry et al 2013, Banerjee et al (2017), and Richardson et al (2018) or external fields, see, e.g., Chumak et al (2009) and Ustinov et al (2019). As an artificial magnetic crystal, magnonic crystals are an important component of spin-wave devices.…”

“…This also enables spin-wave filtering and other functions. Figure 2A shows a magnonic crystal with a groove array, where the width and height of the groove determine the propagating characteristics of the passing spin waves (Richardson et al, 2018). Figure 2B shows the spin-wave propagation characteristics (left side) and dispersion relationship (right side) of magnonic crystal in Figure 2A.…”
