Spontaneous correction of pathologically migrated teeth with periodontal therapy alone

Abstract: Pathological tooth migration is a characteristic sign of an advanced form of chronic periodontitis. The etiology of pathological tooth migration is complex and multifactorial. Usually treatment of pathological migration includes a multidisciplinary approach. However, in some cases, spontaneous repositioning of the pathologically migrated teeth has been reported following periodontal therapy alone. In the present report, following periodontal surgery, there was a spontaneous repositioning of the migrated teeth … Show more

“…suggest that moderate PTM cases require a combination of periodontal and minor orthodontic treatment, while teeth with severe PTM usually cannot be saved and are best replaced with prosthodontic therapy. [ 20 ] Our patient with severe PTM and DIGE unexpectedly achieved a spontaneous resolution of both conditions after nonsurgical treatment alone. The follow-up radiographs indicated that the gain of periodontal bone support was only evident on the lower right sextant.…”

“…[ 19 ] Studies have revealed that spontaneous correction of mild PTM (≤2 mm) frequently occurs after periodontal (nonsurgical/surgical) therapy alone. “…Periodontitis can also lead to pathologic tooth migration (PTM), which often motivates patients to seek periodontal therapy . PTM occurs in 30% to 56% of the patients, mainly caused by diminished periodontal tissue support, mechanical pressure of edematous gingiva, dysfunctions, or malocclusion . As a consequence, teeth become extruded, protruded, and gaps can develop between the anterior teeth.…”
