Interest in orthodontic tooth alignment in adult patients affected by periodontitis: A questionnaire‐based cross‐sectional pilot study

Abstract: Background: Orthodontic treatment can successfully align pathologically migrated teeth and lead to improvement of periodontal stability in patients with periodontitis. Periodontic-orthodontic approaches have gained increasing attention in the past years. Here, we investigated the interest of adults affected by chronic periodontitis in undergoing orthodontic treatment as well as patient-related and tooth-related influence factors. Methods: Periodontal and orthodontic measurements/indices were taken from 115 adul… Show more

“…
Stage IV periodontitis is characterized by severe periodontal attachment loss, vertical bone loss and pathologic tooth migration (PTM) (Brunsvold, 2005), requiring complex rehabilitation due to masticatory dysfunction, secondary occlusal trauma, bite collapse, and drifting and flaring of the remaining teeth (Papapanou et al 2018;Tonetti & Sanz, 2019). Many patients affected by such a condition are interested in orthodontic treatment because of the aesthetic and functional changes caused by PTM, as shown by a recent survey (Hirschfeld et al 2019). If the periodontal inflammation remains uncontrolled during the orthodontic treatment this will accelerate the progression of periodontal destruction leading to further loss of attachment (Wennström et al, 1993).

This suggests that early consultation with an orthodontist be recommended when treating patients with periodontitis 14) .…”
