Spectral broadening in high-power Yb-doped fiber lasers employing narrow-linewidth multilongitudinal-mode oscillators

Abstract: High-power continuous wave fiber lasers with narrow linewidths are required for spectral beam combining systems. A 2.9 kW Yb-doped fiber laser with an output linewidth as narrow as 0.31 nm employing a narrow-linewidth multilongitudinal-mode oscillator is experimentally demonstrated. The numerical simulations reveal that the spectral broadening of the bandwidth grows almost linearly with injected mode number, which provides a potential way to further suppress the nonlinear spectral broadening in high-power fibe… Show more

“…In commercial multi-kilowatt fiber laser, a 20/400 Yb-doped LMA fiber and the co-pumped scheme are commonly used [20]. Thus, the same configuration was adopted in the simulation model; the laser system used a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) layout and the main parameters are listed in Table 1.…”

“…The seed signal will suffer nonlinear propagation in amplifier stage. The nonlinear propagation of the optical field can be simulated by the nonlinear coupling amplitude equation [21,22]. For the seed with a series of longitudinal modes generated by phase modulation, coupling amplitude equation needs to consider a series of light waves.…”

“…Currently, the master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration has become a widely used choice to realize high-power output [7][8][9][10] . However, with the increase of the output power, the main signal laser's spectra will be broadened drastically by nonlinear effects such as self-phase modulation (SPM) [11][12][13] and four-wave mixing (FWM) [11,14] , which significantly affect the stability and further power improvement of the laser.…”
